the ending ahhh ohhhs on this song are very nice
I think it does, and I have a hard time equating this song to cock rock power ballads. The lyrics are far too good for that comparison.stip wrote:I guess the question for some people (since few are arguing that this isn't executed well for what it is) is whether 20 years out a song like this has a place (in moderation)LetMeSleep wrote:

Definitely. It's interesting the amount of people calling this "just a cock rock ballad", relative to the amount of people who really don't care about lyrics much. These are very good for the type of song it is, and 80s power ballads have very bad lyrics. It reminds me of Counting Crows in that they have no problem writing a shamelessly cheesy pop song, but they will put relatively interesting stuff lyrically over it. It might not look great on paper but it has depth.mym23 wrote:I think it does, and I have a hard time equating this song to cock rock power ballads. At this point, I'll take a well written, well executed PJ song over the fast and easy forgettable songs off BS.
I agree. I think a big chorus would have been way too much for this song.harmless wrote:The "It's a fragile thing this life we lead..." section is the closest, but no, it doesn't really. There are rises and falls but nothing deliberately set aside as a chorus. That was a weakness in Unthought Known but a definite plus here.
Spot on. And it's creeping up on me too.Thejambi wrote:The narrator is haunted by the thought of death. The sirens (I get ambulances) remind him one day they will come for him causing him to reflect and express appreciation for what he loves. I don't get 80's cheese from this. The music has that 80's ballad production that carried over into alot of modern pop country top 40 songs but I have always had a guilty pleasure for those.
Much like Backspacer this song doesn't dwell on the doom but reacts more positively to it (more successfully in my eyes)
It is a beautiful and honest song that is really hitting me.
I'm with you fellas. This song moves me unlike anything they gave done in for-fucking-ever.LetMeSleep wrote:Spot on. I haven't been able to get past the music yet, and the lyrics could be taken as kind of cheesy if Eddie's vocal wasn't so beautiful and sincere. As others have said, he really saves this one for me. His emotion is palpable in this song--the execution is quite moving really and I'm not usually a fan of these types of ballads. EDIT: I should clarify that I really like the lyrics, but if Ed didn't pull of the song so well they probably wouldn't have stood out the way they do.LetMeSleep wrote:Spot on.
