Yeah, I expected them to take liberties with the story. Anyone seeking a real taste of mountaineering should really watch one of several great documentaries or a "docudrama" like "Touching the Void".

I actually think they didn't take enough liberties with the story. A lot of the tension gets broken because they tried to follow the timeline of events too closely AND tried to focus on too many characters. And to be honest, I didn't find the cinematography any better than National Geographic's "Everest" series.

Touching the Void was so excellent. Saw that in theaters years ago and I just couldn't believe the events that happened and the tension between those two still to this day. Amazing story. one of the films that brought my fascination and love of the mountains to the point of needing to live in them.

I do adore Beasts of the Southern Wild, though.

It's only like Gummo in that you're constantly wondering things like "Where are the parents?" and "I hope they all have tetanus shots." This film has a real story, and it's good. But it's definitely a gritty slice o' life type flick.
