My knees were always very creaky and sore, even after 24 hours of rest.

My knees and lower back hurt until I switched to low drop shoes. Changed for me virtually overnight when I went with Saucony Kinvaras (4mm differential.) Now I prefer Altras with even less differential (0mm.) Knees and back have never bothered me again. Everyone's got a different running style so don't take that for anything but a suggestion, but do a forum search for zero drop and you'll probably find a lot of discussion on here about it. Google too, but the real heads on RM have some good personal info.
What kind of knee pain were you having? Mine is interior, just above and below the kneecap, so I think it's either bursitis responding to an uptick in activity or, more likely, my flat feet are overpronating still. I'm reading that low drops are not great for folks with low arches, but maybe I'll give them a whirl. Really I should just get off my ass and go do a fitting.
Interior? I hope it's not a meniscus tear......although running was about the one thing I was allowed to keep doing when my meniscus went on me

I'm trying to weigh that too, how much of this is just normal response to resuming an activity I haven't done in years, but it definitely doesn't feel muscular--it's a sharp pain.

I like my daily routine! I don't want to disrupt it with an errand.

Conventional running wisdom: Some discomfort comes with the territory and can be treated with rest and adjustments. If it doesn't get better while being active and "pushing through it" (either walking or running), it's probably an actual injury and you need to take a few days off and/or see a doctor.

I don't want to mislead you, but this info I just found via google seems sound and a jumping off point.

http://www.myrunningtips.com/running-injuries.html

Main takeaway that's 100% true in my experience:
A running injury is often caused by repetitive overuse, it is just the nature of the beast I'm afraid

(Working on good running form is one strategy for easing the strain on muscles and joints)

If you are a beginner runner watch out for the "too much too soon" syndrome! Always build up gradually to give your body time to adjust

Yeah I've been trying to take it slow with walk/run intervals.

The majority of my running life is walk/run intervals. It was less than four years ago that I was setting my watch timer for 90 seconds and cursing my very existence on this earth for about 80 of those 90 seconds until it was time to walk again. Then one day I made it to the River Oaks Theatre from my doorstep. A mile and a quarter. I felt like I had conquered the entire city map.

Did two miles due to time restriction. I'm proud of myself for going 3 days in a row though.

I was definitely there for a long time in 2020 when I started out. I still have to walk now if I want to have a good pace, though I think I can run close to 3 miles slowly without walking.

Ran through five miles of heavy fog today. If I didn't feel my feet touching the ground, you could have told me that I was running through the sky. Visibility was next to zero and humidity was measured at 100%. It's an absolute miracle that I didn't trip on the segments with broken sidewalks.

My shoulder is still heeling from my fall back in October. I am cautious.

I've been fairly lucky, only fallen two or three times. Each was pretty minor. But I definitely felt each of them for days.

Will you go for a fourth or take a rest day?
