I never got into the EU stuff that discussed the origin of the Jedi or the Force, since I think explaining historical backstory like that was one of the mistakes the prequels made; I'm fine with it just being mysterious. However, from what I do understand, the Force did operate differently/have a different impact depending on where you were in the galaxy (or if you were from outside of it). The Yuuzhan Vong, for example, were completely outside of the Force, despite the fact that they were much more into the "natural world" and way less reliant on technology than the cultures we see in the film. There's been some speculation that this Snoke character is an "outsider" who won't have the same rules apply to him that we've seen in the other films, but there doesn't appear to be evidence to back it up.

Anyways, that's a long-winded way of not really addressing stip's question, and another prelude to reminding everyone: the EU doesn't apply.
I think this was implied in something that they're still considering canon.

What the hell are the Yuuzhan Vong? My knowledge of the EU starts and stops with that Thrawn trilogy.

The Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy about 25 years ABY, and they came very close to toppling the New Republic (even taking over Coruscant at the time). They were anti-technology (their ships, their weapons, and everything else they used were organic) and aimed to destroy advanced civilizations. As I mentioned above, they also existed outside the Force, so Luke and the Jedi he trained had trouble battling them. This was told over the course of a 19-novel series.

Good point:

Someone who hasn't really been discussed in the last few weeks: Max Von Sydow. No posters, no presence in the trailers, no discussion. Anyone else a little bit curious as to who and what he will be in the movie? For such an iconic actor, is he really going to be relegated to a minor bit-part? I hope not... I had hoped he would be the one pulling the strings of Kylo, but doesn't seem to be the case.

They've done a great job of keeping his character under wraps.

Von Sydow's role in the film has been leaked, so it's out there if you're really curious.

Good 60 minute report on it. Tiny bit new footage of Rey with BB 8 but not really any dialogue.

That certainly put Force Awakens in perspective. I'm officially with you guys now. Compared to what Star Trek has been reduced to, Awakens is going to be a legitimate masterpiece.

Movie of the year.

As a defender of the first two star trek movies, that did not instill me with confidence.
