She's a skywalker. She had felt Lukes presence in the OT and had those comments about remembering/not remembering her mother. WE know she is strong with the force. Nothing else needed to be said or done to know that Leia is also a powerful force woman.
Yeah but for her to suddenly be able to pull that off. They should have just killed her character there

I dont think everything needs to be explained. It doesnt need a full backstory. I see a lot of people (not saying you) that are angry and upset about Snoke. There has been a movie/storytelling culture of needing to explain everything in movies to the detriment of actual story telling.

I hear what you're saying and get it - to me that scene just seemed too out of character. It might gel better with me in subsequent viewings

I loved the idea of it but I didnt love the execution. Something about how it was filmed and the CGI didnt sit well with me. But i love the narrative idea of it.

I guess in hindsight - my issue could be to do with the execution.

Other issues I had.
BB-8 controlling an AT-ST and it becoming super agile and manuvarable
Younger Luke's beard
Wasted Phasma

The VFX in this were so interesting. Most of them felt very fanciful and... less heavy/real than JJ's or Gareth's. It was such an interesting choice to keep it feeling "old school" or "fantastic."

WHAAAT?? BB8 controlling the AT?? That was amazing and younger Luke looked really great. I hated seeing how great he looked because that made me want to see him in action destroying everyone.

BB8 was borderline terrible in this movie. All of his stuff was just too much. His plugging the circuit board and the ATST scene... I didn't like any of it.
Luke's beard didn't bother me.
Phasma was fine. Like Stip said earlier, she's a Bond henchman. And was used just well. If JJ hadn't dropped the ball on her in TFA then I'd agree with you. But based on what they gave us, I felt she was used perfectly in this.

The only problem I had with "young Luke" was using him at the end. It totally tipped their hand immediately. I knew something was up the second he pulled the hood down at Crait.

I also find it interesting the things people have against Phasma. To me she is the Bobba Fett of the new trilogy and was actually utilized quite a bit more than he ever was. The argument is she was underutilized. Yet everyone is totally fine with Bobba Fett. I think that is a "childhood vs adulthood" experience.

I guess my issue with Phasma kinda stems from having recently just finished reading the novel where she's made out to be a total bad-ass warrior and then both of these films just minimize any of that.

I agree Strat. I could see how she could survive it by using the force, but the way it was shot was not optimal.

You know Phasma survived right?

She must have.

I hope not. I’d rather see a new character. It’s too late in the game maybe for a new one or to develop Phasma back from the dead.

Maybe getting rid of so many primary characters is to make room in 9 for the main characters?

I wish we’d bitten more of luke and Rey in this
