The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an interesting institution. I think almost everyone agrees that the honor itself, while nice, is ultimately meaningless, but I am consistently impressed by its ability to generate measured, objectively considered music-related discussion that is separate from any one person's impassioned preferences. It seems to be one of the few lenses that people are willing to look and apply criteria through apart from their own, to try to understand -- as much as possible -- how music is perceived, and has been shaped and changed, by things other than what is important to them. I don't care who gets inducted, but I'm happy the RRHOF exists.

This was early 1998 if memory serves, pre-Enema of the State, which I think was really the album that pushed their influence into the stratosphere. The fact that they were opening for Primus -- a band with niche appeal but that ultimately ended up being way, way less influential -- is evidence of this. I honestly think Blink 182 is one of a handful of bands from that era whose influence is still felt in ways we don't even realize -- like, they were almost solely to thank/blame for about 5-10 years' worth of Sum 41s and Fall Out Boys and Panics at Discos, but I feel like there are still songs that catch fire from time to time that have obvious roots in their aesthetic (that "shut up and dance with me" song from a few years ago springs to mind). I find their music obnoxious but I feel like some of the tics and aesthetics that they made prominent have been so absorbed into so many different kinds of music that they're almost no longer recognized as such.

I listened to that massive JUICE WRLD posthumous album from earlier in the year and remember thinking that some of those songs sounded like Blink 182 tunes with rapping over them, then I saw that he had cited them as a major influence

i swear to fuck if Blink 182 ends up in the hall of fame before the replacements i will be a very upset young man.

Yes, I believe it was March 1998 at Roseland. They sounded like they were jabbing at their instruments separately without any coordination between them - which kind of sounds like noise, and not the abstract kind of delivery - like they didn’t know how to play with one another at all. If memory serves me correctly, they announced mid show, while being booed that Primus would be next (cheer), the bassist tried play a few bars from My Name is Mud, followed by bottles being thrown at them, then they left soon thereafter.

Primus came on after and played a great set. Aquabats were indeed the opening band.

Maybe a year or so later, Blink-182 played in Albany, where I went to college, as part of the school day long concert - which that year also featured Parliament and The Roots. Blink-182 was similarly terrible. Parliament and The Roots were amazing.

His drumming on Blink's self titled album (2003) was a huge leap forward in drumming. He's bringing hip-hop influenced hi-hats into punk and pop punk music. Listen to what he's doing on;
- Feeling This. Instantly recognizable intro on drums.
- I Miss You. He's changing drumming here. You may not be into the genre but his drumming is on a different level here.
- Always. He spends so much time double timing without the average listener having a clue.

He upped that gamesmanship on Neighborhoods (2011). Take a close listen, he is the star of every song but they just have him low in the mix.
- Ghost on the Dance Floor
- After Midnight. Everything he learned and put on display on the self titled album but with better and more seamless execution.
- Heart's All Gone.
- Wishing Well.

Im sure Coldplay will get inducted at some point...White Stripes, Strokes and Kings Of Leon too. Jack White as a solo artist too. Wilco could be yeah, Sleater Kinney im sure too...Cat Power and Fiona Apple....

Agree with this--Blink has been, for better or for worse, massively influential.

before blink really hit it big and were touring smaller venues they stayed over night at my buddies house who got them to come to tiny little monaca pa. he loved them (he was a senior in highschool and i worked with him while going to college)

Imo foo fighters, Kanye, Jay z, are the only locks. Dave Grohl was or is on the board of the hall of fame. Blink is too much of a joke band, the Hall generally likes "serious" bands.

The Hall let R.E.M., U2, and the Talking Heads in with no wait. Pearl Jam only waited a year. Cheap Trick waited something like 14 years. They were not thought of as a serious band by critics. Blink 182 will wait a long time if they ever get in.

Heavy Metal bands have also gotten the shaft. Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are not in.

Green Day got in very quickly upon eligibility and they were as much of a "joke band" as Blink ever was. Like Blink, they were massively successful pop-punk band that pivoted towards "serious stuff" later in their career. I guarantee Blink gets in within 2 or 3 years of being eligible.

The Ramones got in on their first year of eligibility... you wanna talk about "joke" bands? Of course their influence is immense and there are other factors at play but I don't think this argument "joke bands vs. serious bands" fully holds up

My 14 year old likes Juice Wrld. I don't get it.
