Unclear what was going on with my knees but I took nine days off and they felt fine the other day. Little twinge today so I'm going to stick to every other day and see how that goes.

How far had you been running each outing?

Ran my first 7 miler in over a month.
7.45 miles at a 9:18 pace.
I'll take it!

How far had you been running each outing?
Walk/run mix of like 2-3 miles.

Hopefully that was just an anomaly. Are you enjoying it or does it just feel like work?

Running every day is a young man's game, and you ain't so young anymore.
Not exactly related to your post, but this thread is so solid. I've only begun to hit a few of these points in my own running but I buy into this line of thinking 100%
"Most over training is under-recovering"

My legs have felt fine lately when i'm out there, but my shortness of breath has just kept me from going faster consistently or having to walk less when I up the tempo just a little bit. I have been consciously trying to be aware and regulate it, but seems like it takes months to get only marginally better.

I'm no coach (I just populate my social media feeds with them) but it really, really sounds like you're constantly going too hard out there. Seems like you're always talking about your breathing and your heart. Never your legs. What kind of pace do you usually target on your easy days?

I really don't think I'm going too hard. The only time I push it is on the third mile if I feel up to it. My first mile is steadily around 8:50 to 9:00 on average, typically with just a short walk around .85. I'm usually fine then, but just take a quick break to keep my second mile on target.
When i'm going out to do an "easy" run, which is typically 3 miles, I'm usually hoping to be around 9:15 on average. But I do try to either sprint or go really hard the last .10-.15.

How many running coaches are there out there?

I always wondered what Jerome Bettis was up to after his well earned, well officiated, super bowl win over the Seahawks.

The Seahawks have never been in the Super Bowl...

Think of an "easy" run not in distance but in effort. For instance, 1-2 times a week you could increase your mileage to 4-5 miles but target something closer to 9:30/9:45 for those runs. Your harder efforts might adapt accordingly and before you know it you're breaking 25 mins on your 5k runs.

I've been doing 4 miles very close to that pace since around October, but yeah I would like to work that in more than once a week. But with needed rest days it's difficult.
My friend said the race we're doing at the end of April is really easy and flat. My goal as of today is 26:30, but if my training improves that could change.

What race is it? More importantly, what's the race swag looking like?

I am not going to divulge such personal information.
