well that's not to take anything away from Collapse into now. There are some great songs on that thing. It was a high point to go out on. It Happened Today is an all time favorite at this point.

I want whoever produced that record to produce an album for pearl jam.

While I don't like Lightning Bolt as much as Collapse into Now as a piece of work in itself, it does give me the sense that if Pearl Jam went out on it, I would be perfectly happy with that. Collapse into Now was an excellent swan song, and I think that if Lightning Bolt became that, it would be interesting to see if it went up in people's estimation.

Listened again yesterday and it's the session 1 songs that grab me. They feel less forced, more natural. The session 2 songs feel they were written with an agenda.

Yeah, I switched from LB to Collapse Into Now during working out and I was amazed at how well Collapse Into Now is holding up. Man, I miss R.E.M.

Post Script..."Radio Song" from "Out of Time" also stands out. The rapper is a bit cheesy, but that song does have some legit funk to it.

Speaking of which, I now have a big desire to listen to Lotus.

Thankful that so many live versions of CF exist, as I would have played the proper studio take to death during college.

I'm partial to this one because it's from the only time I saw R.E.M. Nils' solo at the end shouldn't work, but for some reason it does.

we should do another REM tournament so I can get knocked out in the first round of something.

I'd have to say that my favourite version of this has to be from the 2001 unplugged performance they did.

That's so weird that you have compared Lightning Bolt to Collapse Into Now, for me Im always thinking of the Drowned In Sound review of Collapse when weighing up LB.

There were some songs on Collapse that I liked but I think the fact that they knew it was their last crept in, and bits were rushed in there... I think Uberlin could have been a classic REM tune but the lazy middle-8 ruins it for me... That in turn reminds me of the last Audioslave album, again lazy parts and individual songs are repetitive... just a case of getting it finished and out the gap... but thats a whole other topic

I think Collapse was better than Accelerate, though I like both Collapse definitely taps into their expansive catalogue and the rawer sounds in Walk it Back, Someone is You and of course Blue which was nice one to wrap up their catalogue and again reference a major part of their career.

With regards to PJ, I think the part time band issue is there. I think LB is a really good album with solid tunes, its just there isnt 'blood on the tracks' so to speak and I am not compelled to listen to it, though when I do its enjoyable... the only standout issue I have is the tracklisting... Sirens after MFS is so jarring... also the piano line at the start and end of Future Days inst earned or even required... if you had been taken through the ringer by what came before it would be a way to wrap it up, but for the most part the album isnt going for the jugular, its more meditative (which is perfectly fine) but the resolution of that goddamn piano line isnt needed. You could have just had the acoustic guitar start it. Case in point on the new Queens album I Appear Missing takes me on a rollercoaster so when the piano comes in on ...like clockwork I am in the boat to be taken along (only for that song to take me over the waterfall)

I totally agree with this. I think that if this album had truly taken us on that noisy, apocalyptic thrill ride that we hoped it would, this ending would've been appropriate. But as the album is a pretty subtle affair all the way through, it's just all too unnecessary and jarring.

Buddy of mine just texted me that his kid, who is 13, just asked him if he heard of band called Pearl Jam. Wants the new album for Christmas. Gotta say, that surprised me a little!
