Could you see Tyrion--a scholar who almost certainly would know about the legend of Azor Ahai--discussing the prophesy with Dany next week (implying that it could be her, but also some heavy-handed cutting for how it could be Jon too) and then in the space of two episodes, Dany flies away, Jon gets knifed, and Stannis' army is on the brink. Big cliffhanger to the end the season on the horizon.

So in the Behind the Episode for this last one, the creators referred to the head White Walker (the guy on the dock at the end facing off with Jon Snow) by name. They called him: The Night King. Perhaps some of you will recall the story from Season 3 that one of the episodes from that season was originally named the same thing, but the creators changed it to avoid spoilers.

Here's a quote from a Bran chapter in ASOS that references the character:

Nan telling Bran about the Night's King:

The gathering gloom put Bran in mind of another of Old Nan’s stories, the tale of Night’s King. He had been the thirteenth man to lead the Night’s Watch, she said; a warrior who knew no fear. “And that was the fault in him,” she would add, “for all men must know fear.” A woman was his downfall; a woman glimpsed from atop the Wall, with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars. Fearing nothing, he chased her and caught her and loved her, though her skin was cold as ice, and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well.

He brought her back to the Nightfort and proclaimed her a queen and himself her king, and with strange sorceries he bound his Sworn Brothers to his will. For thirteen years they had ruled, Night’s King and his corpse queen, till finally the Stark of Winterfell and Joramun of the wildlings had joined to free the Watch from bondage. After his fall, when it was found he had been sacrificing to the Others, all records of Night’s King had been destroyed, his very name forbidden.

Which would mean that The Night King is.... A Stark.

Maybe that sheds a little light on why the didn't pursue Jon and/or provides a fun level of subtext to their staring contest at the end.

Yeah, last season, when the same character turned Caster's last son into an Other, HBO's website listed the character as the Night King until someone realized, "Oh, shit, should not have done that," and took it out.

I wonder if the Night King was actually a Stark bastard; I'm imagining Jon returning to the Wall, Sam explaining the history to him, and feeling a kinship with the big baddie (even though he's not really a bastard). For a while this season, I thought Jon (and the viewers) might learn his true parentage, but there's just too much going on now.

It's true. We don't know for sure that he is dead and most book readers believe he is not. But he is definitely attacked and seemingly left for dead, yes.

I'd be okay with a fade to black... several beats... everyone expects credits to roll... fade in to Stoneheart scene. Then credits with triumphant main theme playing!
