I've never been very sure of this and have found that I am inconsistent in whether I refer to bands as "they" or "it"

Oh I was talking about the lowercase "ot" but yes "is" is also correct

It. When referring to a collective group, it is singular. If you are referring to members of that group as individuals, then it is plural.
