It is kind of strange that the track list for the new album still isn't out and then these leak.

If you have an album release date, a title, a single, and artwork, then how is the track list not out?

Because BoB hasn't decided which 8 year old outtakes he wants to fuck up.

i've never been so sad to hear good new pearl jam songs.

dont be sad, we have got them now, and if PJ is doing somehting different the the norm on LB and backspacer, then maybe album 11 will be back to what we are used to. im not that worried about what they are doing now, every artist changes things up from time to time or they get bored and their art gets stale, these 2 albums might not be exactly what we want, but if its what they want to put out then we will let them do it and see where they go next. but these 2 songs brought back great feelings so im super happy to have them, and maybe more like it will show up soon to satisfy the ones who cant get into the newer stuff. but i still think LB is going to be a good album, there are most likely 9 more songs we havent heard yet, and im excited to see what they are

Im all for everything you just said but it doesnt appear that PJ care to be very prolific these days. So what we end up with is two of those types of records over a 10 year period....

they could also find themselves re dedicated at some point also, maybe they are all, or most of them are in a place where PJ isnt exactly what they wanna do, but that can certainly change, we will just have to see. they are all at or near 50, so they could be losing the passion, or could just be distracted from it with family. i know the last 10 years havent been exactly what some of us wanted, but the first 13 to 15 have been exactly what i wanted, so ill keep giving them the benefit of the doubt

maybe the PJ camp leaked these out to gauge the response - to see if people were still interested in, oh i don't know, more interesting music. they're going to monitor the internets, and if people seem to dig them, they'll put them on the album.

Cold Concession is my favorite of these 5 songs
Followed closely by Mind Your Manners, which I love more each day. Hard to compare those two though, since they are so different.

Let it Ride has a great extended outro, but I can see myself enjoying lightning bolt more depending on how they finish it.

As is Forever Days is pretty but a bit too much of a wallflower. I'd rank it at the bottom but with the caveat that given the right flourishes it could still get much better. For instance, if futuredays is that instagram clip from a few months ago (or whatever that was), I could completely turn around, since that song sounded great.

The commercial itself (and accompanying video) was cheesy, but that deal never bugged me. I didn't see it as much different than Sony paying for that Given To Fly commercial that came out in advance of Yield.

And the partnership itself, just a means to distribute their records to the masses since not every town has a record shop, but you don't have to go far to find a Target.

For what it's worth, I think Backspacer coulda been a killer four song EP.

I keep beating this dead horse, but Backspacer is trying to do something different, and was a bright, refreshing album after 3 heavy albums. It is hard to compare to this, since it is trying to do something totally different. It was a necessary break, I think, and if we get another two albums out of pearl jam I think it'll be remembered that way, especially if they go back to heavier stuff. They may not of course--the arguments about writing for live crowds certainly has something going for it.

If the last 2 slbums were full of songs like these I believe the "hardcores" - those that travel for a dozen shows a tour would be more on board with them. The less hardcore would have completely dropped off the band. They'd be 3 or 4 lines down on a major festival poster and the general music listening public (I'm talking like Stereogum or Consequence of Sound readers, people who go to music festivals) would have written them off and they would be looking at a career like where John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, Black Crowes or Los Lobos are right now. Not a bad thing, but people would be whining about why they're stuck in this lot instead of conquering fesitvals. My comments here are not about commercial success, but about relevance, two different things.

People do. I do. They're going for the mid-tier PJ fan, who are worthy PJ fans. I know I'm a "fanboy" defender on here, but I've gone to a dozen shows, have never traveled to see them. In my mind, I'm a hardcore fan, but nothing like some people. I think there's a certain breed of music lover they want to connect to in the modern era. Not everyone can be pleased and can be on board. I'm using "festival headliner" not in some kind of commercially competitive way, but as a benchmark for what sort of fans might be exposed and could dig the music. Those fans would probably shy away from posting around here and probably only go to shows when they're in town, but they're still fans who love music.

The point is that I - and many music fans - don't really give a shit about any fan demographics beyond how the intensity of the band's considerations of such things impacts their songwriting. Fixating on precisely these extra-compositional issues prevents Pearl Jam from keeping their collective eyes on the ball, and - as evidenced by these releases - the music is the poorer for it.

I think there is a difference between writing songs that you think are going to be popular, and writing songs that you think will be fun to play live. I think pearl jam has definitely moved in the later direction. It's not always a good thing, but there is still (I think) an important distinction to be made here.
