I love this song so much but I can't get over how poorly this live version delivers it (Somebody did point out that sometimes the phone cameras get a bad impression, so I hope that's the case).
Eddie is flat throughout almost the whole song, his voice missing more notes than it hits, even on the LOWER parts of the song. He has to strain and yell for the higher notes. It's this kind of live performance that makes me suspicious of the album because I don't get how he could sing on the album so well but be SO off live, and straining SO much to hit notes that he sings so strongly on the album.
The guitars even sound flat and don't do a good job of conveying the feel of the song from the album (I've had this problem with Stone and Mike before tbh. Some years they nail it, but often they do not, and sometimes their guitars have this weird 'flat' sound that I can't understand how that's possible since I'm sure they're in tune....but it always brings some songs down, and I don't even know what's causing the effect).
The tempo is good at least. I would love hearing it live. But after hearing how good Scared of Fear was on Stern I just expected more. I hoped the songs would come alive like Avocado did on the tour but sadly I don't think Eddie is up to making that happen . Still one of the best albums (if not the best) since the 90s.
Im harsh though, when I see them live suddenly they sound like the most amazing thing ever. Eddie's voice can still amazingly fill a room. So it's not all bad, but yea....on video this really did not sound good (hoping the official boots sound better and its just a bad capture)

Is this down-tuned? The downtuning can absolutely produce this effect. For one, the strings are rattling around a bit looser on the guitar, but for two, the guitars are actually tuned flat — not flat relative to each other, but flat relative to what your brain knows the song is supposed to sound like. On some songs this really makes a difference — they just sound dead.

I don't think it is downtuned. Also I think they sound pretty good on that clip. Ed sounds fine, struggling slightly to find the pitch a few times but well within the standard for live performances

I believe this song is in open G tuning or at least a hybrid open G tuning like Stone uses in Daughter
You definitely hear some open notes ringing out
I don't know if it's the audio on the video itself, but the guitars do seem a bit flat, which would be really weird since both Mike and Stone have tuners on their boards and both have roadies to make sure their guitars are in tune. So I'm guessing it's just the audio on the video or stream that's causing this to sound a bit flat

mikes guitar is definitely in the open tuning. you can see him hit the big G’s in the outro with no hands on the guitar - a la keith richards (kind of cool)
looks like stone is in standard tuning. can’t really tell about josh

I know exactly what you mean about that weird downtuning effect. What’s confusing to me is I feel like sometimes they sound like that on songs that are not downtuned. Here is an example and another is the video of Wash that people were posting from the same series of shows. It wasn’t downtunedbut it sounded like it was due to a weird flatter guitar effect. I have no idea what caused it. I just expected this song to sound…sharper (not in the musical sense lol but just cleaner? Idk). I just don’t think the live version approached the studio one and with Pearl Jam that honestly used to usually go the other way

You are listening toa shitty cell phone recording from front row which isnt going to pick up all that you want to hear. The file is also altered so as to get it to upload and stream across the internet.

I dunno what it was but the clips from the portland show sound much better than Vancouver
Here's Wreckage...definitely seems to have more power and is more in tune

Have you heard the official boots versus a cell phone video?

I havent! Are they out yet? Did it sound better in the boots than in the phone clip? And how does it sound compared to the Vancouver clip?

I understand the shortcomings of audience recordings, but if Eddie is pitchy and struggling, usually an official recording will make that more, not less, evident.

He's also kind of the star of the show on Setting Sun. Which, for now at least, I'm convincing myself is not a big deal.

I wonder if there's any drama with that. Stone might feel some jealousy and I wouldn't hold it against him very hard. He'll just duck waddle away.
