Worth a listen for fans of Serj/System:

Estepario is one of the best around, but I don't understand why a lot of these virtuosic metal drummers insist on having the most sterile drum sound. Not a big fan of this trend.

It was fine and even made sense in a lot of really technical kinds of metal where you really want to hear everything that's being performed (djent, techdeath) cause it fits the aesthetic but I agree, it has permeated almost all facets of metal now and it makes things sound way less interesting.

Brent Hinds is leaving Mastodon after ~25 years. Always been a big fan of their stuff, but he wasn't writing nearly as much after the first four albums. He has also openly stated on multiple occasions that he "hates heavy metal" and doesn't like being in a metal band. Weird.

He has insane chops and a very distinct voice, though, so probably not the easiest to replace. We shall see.

anyone into folk (Celtic) metal and / or melo-death, Eluveitie has a new album out next month; their sound is a lot more shiny than it used to be but I still appreciate them for having a mix of styles that just tickles my ear like a girlfriend's tongue, and nobody else in metal is doing it quite like they do

I'm still really bummed about Brent Hinds. I have no doubt that he would have reconciled with the band eventually. Like Corgan and Iha, or the Gallagher brothers. They had been through too much together to not.

But an SUV driver failed to yield and killed him while he was riding his motorcycle. It's just devastatingly sad. I can't stop listening to Mastodon and I know that's not a bad thing, but they'll never be the same.

I've only felt this way a few times about a musician I've never met, with the passing of Cornell and Lanegan. I'm sure I'll get over it, but not today.

Allen Blickle, founding member and former drummer for Baroness, passed away at 42.

Red, Blue and Yellow & Green are all essential albums. A champion of the skins. May he rest in peace.
