I'm glad my bitching post about the electoral college didn't go any further. I'm too lazy to talk about it anyway.

Is anyone actually pro-electoral college?

Honestly, it really doesn't matter. There's only been a discrepancy between the popular vote and the electoral vote, what, twice?

It probably affects who gets nominated to some degree, though.

Not disagreeing, but can you expand on this? I haven't really thought about it in terms of the nomination process.

Maybe it favors going for moderate candidates since you need to win swing states whereas if it were popular vote get an ideological candidate and have her GOTV in her party's strongholds in places like Texas, NY, Cali, etc. that don't usually matter? Idk just thinking out loud, I haven't really thought about that either.

Serious question: What has this gotten them? What have they been able to accomplish as far as a republican or conservative agenda.

I mean abortion isn't an issue I focus on a lot but I just read an article about the tremendous success they've had rolling back abortion rights and making access to abortion much more difficult all across the country. Just as one example.

This graphic is staggering to me. How can the GOP beat these odds (nationally) without drastic changes? I mean essentially all their numbers are shrinking when all the Dems numbers are increasing. I think even the Mormon church has admitted recently that their numbers are essentially flat.

As people said a few pages ago, it comes down to participation at times. Also, that graph is a little wonky, I think; surely, there are way more Evangelical Christians in the US than people who don't affiliate with a religion, so that +46 equals way more votes than the +36 on the other side.

I guess my larger point is that those bottom two groups (Hispanics and Millennials) are gonna be big mountains to climb going forward.

They spent at least part of 2012-14 continuing to fight immigration, rather than win the Latino vote through religion...and now the pope is more liberal than some moderate Republicans, which further hinders that avenue.

This was a pretty obvious answer, and I dunno how I missed it. Anecdotally: I teach a lot of students of color during the summer, and while my Hispanic students do skew more religious than other groups (except for immigrants from Africa), they've all got a chip on their shoulders about immigration, even though most of them were born here. If someone wanted to organize that voting block, they'd have nice weight behind it.
