I must admit once he hit Phantom Radio I kind of stopped following. It was feeling a bit too much like variations on the same old thing. I think Blues Funeral was his last really excellent album but I hope this is a return to form.
I've still been following him closely, but definitely agree that Phantom Radio and Gargoyle are quite repetitive in places both musically and lyrically. I was actually disappointed to hear that this album would be another trek through his electronic influences as I feel that he's been on autopilot for a little while now. Was hoping for something completely out of left field instead of what could basically be more of the same. That said, he still sounds great and holding out hope for the final product. The new single is okay, nothing spectacular, reminds me of one of the throwaway rocker tunes from Bubblegum like Sideways In Reverse or something.

The b-side to his latest single release is a little more interesting:

This is how I feel also. I kind of lost interest after Bubblegum, though I have always preferred his early stuff, The Winding Sheet, Whiskey etc. and haven't paid much attention to his latest output. But what I've heard it all sounds kind of the same. Having said that, I heard this on one of Bourdain's episodes and been listening to it non stop for the past couple of days. Had the chorus been better, this would've been an amazing song:

Thats one of the best songs from Gargoyle, and it was such a pleasure to listen to live.

Super bummed, Mark had to cancel his performance at Stones & Dusted this weekend due to a family emergency. Was really looking forward to his set out in the desert.

Anyone got his Sleevenotes book? Got it in the mail yesterday. It’s him talking about his songwriting process and then picks apart like 30 songs or so from throughout his career explaining how and why he wrote them and what they’re about. Goddamn the man has dealt with a lot of death in his life. Can’t wait for his autobiography next year.

Also Joseph Arthur, while a great songwriter, really turns me off. He's a high ass straight out of an Urban Outfitters catalog.

When RNDM disbanded with little fanfare, I wondered what the deal was. Then I read somewhere something about Joseph’s addiction issues, and around the same time Jeff did an interview where he mentioned being grateful he didn’t do too many drugs. I can’t help but think that was part of the dissolution.
The last time I saw Joe play he was completely fucked up and it was a horrible show. So that matches up with the timeline. I think he's doing better now. He's like 47 with a 6 pack.
