I sure wish McP would have given me this much effort into taking down the last Transformers movie.

Not that time. The rumour is we see him go full out in this decaptiating rebels in large numbers.

Ps I always hoped my Star Wars posts were coherent. Ah well
So we see him be a sword swooping space boss literally days before he is an old, past-his-prime damaged fighter who has a stumbling fight with another old man.
To be fair, I believe the time difference is more than just days. Tarkin looked decades younger (if that actually is supposed to be Tarkin).
This could lead me to believe this will be a failed mission?
Leading to a side-note sequel?

I was under the impression that it was, but I might be misremembering.

But that's like 5 years prior to him being a badass again and almost taking down his own son who was in his prime and probably should've taken the old man out, no problem.
Maybe he just never oiled his moving parts and started seizing up?

This would explain his undying envy and hatred for The Tin-Man.

He's toying with a kid who is too emotional and unprepared in Empire, and just sparring with him as part of the emperor's plan. None of the saber fights there are about great fighting. They are used as character development events. The closest to an exception you get is on the sail barge, but even that really amounts to like two shots that are being used to tell us that Luke has been developing as a Jedi in the time between movies.

But I guess if what people want is for Star Wars to play more like late-90's Van Damme flicks, then godspeed.

For what it's worth, I'm more on your side here, friend. It's one of the curses that's buried in the blessings of new technology. The fights can be more spectacular and fast and acrobatic, but they lose their human character. I believe Lucas wanted all the saber battles to look like Yoda v Dooku all along. It was the shortcomings in the technology that forced him to make the fights more character based. But it was a happy accident.

Im sure you're right about Lucas. And for what it's worth, I don't think actiony light sword dances are necessarily bad. They just bore me.

Exactly. The epic fight in Phantom Menace is a good example, I think, of how an actiony light sword dance can be fantastic and compelling and not at all boring.

I thought the light saber duels in force awakens were excellent. Very visceral with none of that absurd, over the top action movie fluff. Hopefully Rouge One will keep that going.

Five Reasons Why Star Wars: Rogue One Could Be Better Than The Force Awakens
This isn’t going to be your average Star Wars film, but it’s still going to be a Star Wars film.

There’s something refreshing about that idea. One of the stonier arguments lodged against JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens is that too much of the film capitalized on familiar story beats and worn-out tropes, with some even arguing it was more or less a remake of the original 1977 blockbuster. They’re not exactly wrong, and that’s why there’s reason to believe Edwards’ galactic war epic might wind up being the fresh and exciting Star Wars film we’ve been looking for…

Again, it’s only two minutes — and let’s be real, The Force Awakens was a goddamn blast — but there’s a lot of promise in those two minutes. (Come to think of it, Edwards really does know how to sell his films with a handful of time. Anyone remember those trailers ahead of 2014’s Godzilla? Beautiful stuff.). Because of this, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that there’s a hot chance Rogue One winds up being a better film than The Force Awakens. Does it matter?
http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/04/f ... e-awakens/

And I actually agree with each of their five "reasons." Especially the bit about finally expanding the universe. Even if we're just barely outside of the Skywalkers (and not even entirely) it's a step in the right direction.

Man, I want this to be so good.

I didn't really take the time to pick them apart when I saw it in theaters and it's been months since I last saw the film, but my memory is that the fights are really well done and much more in line with what I want a lightsaber battle to be in my Star Wars films.

But I need to see the movie again and really focus on them before I can pretend to defend that feeling.
