Absolutely loved it. After seeing it and Secret of Kells, I'll pretty much line up to see anything the director puts out at this point. Animation isn't dead yet and I'm so thankful.

Saw The Martian tonight. Absolutely loved it. So refreshing to see a movie that is both intense and positive -- it's about problem solving, ingenuity, and teamwork -- no more, no less. Damon is great, Ridley Scott is at the top of his game. It's very faithful to the book -- all the Damon/Mars stuff is basically verbatim, and all the Earth/NASA stuff was executed better on film.

Kristin Wiig is such a one-note actress, and I just don't like Donald Glover, but those are the only negative comments I could come up with.

Wish there were more mainstream movies like it.

Man, it was a letdown for me. I didnt bought damon's character not once; and the dialog seemed to be fill with one liners all the time. Every actor seemed to be doing a role from another space movie we all saw.

And yes, wiig and glover were awful.

To be fair to Matt Damon and Ridley Scott, that was the exact tone of the book. I understand if it wasn't your thing, but it was very faithful to the text -- Whatney even says "I'm gonna have to science the shit out of this" in the book.

I get that, but the overall tone of the movie, and i cant figure it out why its been so praised, feels so forced to me. The guy barely lost weight? there is no conflict at all because it doesnt feel like its one....and he is left on Mars. A missed oportunity maybe because of a weak original material i dont know.

It's a brutal, minimalist thriller driven by masterful set-pieces, and full of subtle character development delivered visually through moments in actors' performances. And it has a fascinating, anguished, intimate, tragic relationship at its core.

Also, Benicio Del Toro and a grizzled Tommy Lee Jones engage in multiple knife fights. I mean, come the fuck on. It's awesome.

After years of waiting, I finally got to see Gerald Kargl's infamous Angst. Not what I expected. I've never seen anything like it. The camerawork is absolutely incredible - palpably sensual, uncomfortably intimate, utterly singular. You can very clearly see how huge of an influence it was on Gaspar Noe.

Agreed. Some really great stuff, but a lot more annoyingly mediocre stuff. Once again, Villenueve's style is better than the subpar script he's working with.

The Juarez extraction scene is fucking phenomenal, though. And so is Del Toro's performance.
