If you look at the build up in TFA, and the twist in TLJ, it just doesn't make sense. They could have made her nobody to begin with, and no one would have cared in a negative way, only positive. Obi-Wan was a nobody, Luke was a nobody in the first movie.

They did make her nobody, though. It was fan reaction and internet speculation that turned Rey into "someone." We did that. There's nothing in the film that points to her being a descendant of a known character.

In the end ANY answer to Rey's parents (skywalker, kenobi, palpatine, force child) would have been extremely problematic and disappointing. You can only really make that exciting reveal once, and they did it in Empire. Johnson's decision to go with no one is

A: the only answer that will work

B: beautifully reinforces one of the central messages of the film

Also, while Kylo was pushing Rey it wasn't actually him who said who her parents with. He got her to say it, and she's the one who said they were nobodies. I read it he knew she knew but was struggling to admit it so he pushed her until she accepted it.

I really hope it isn't misdirection, because it's brilliant that she has no connection to the Skywalkers and Kenobis of the galaxy.

Also, Rey is way too young to possibly be Obi Wan's or Palpatine's daughter, is she not?

I don't think so. Pretty sure Abrams will stick with - her parents 'were no one.' They double downed on that theme with the slave boy at the end demonstrating burgeoning force powers. I think that's significant and points to the broader theme of the new trilogy.

Neither did Snoke, as both are supporting characters that represent a wall our main protagonist/antagonist pairings need to bounce off of. Attention paid to that backstory (in this movie) draws focus from our principle characters.

There will be some canon exploration later, when you can make it its own thing.

Rey's parentage mystery is a driving force for her character, so I get why some are hung up on it, but it really shouldn't matter to everyone WHO her parents are. Whoever they are/were, it doesn't change what we have seen on screen so far. It may provide an explanation for why she is so strong with the Force, or it may not. I think the evidence of young other "nobody's" throughout the galaxy exhibiting Force-powers is just strengthening the narrative that this is how balance will be brought to the galaxy and not necessarily through a rejuvenation of the Jedi Order (the old way). It failed Luke, and now here we are. Yoda hinted at it. Kylo hinted at it.

It's time to let go.

I think Rey and Kylo's connection is genuine. He's looking for someone just like she is. They both need someone to show them the way and to help. Kylo hasn't really been shown to be a huge liar or unreliable narrator yet. And in that scene he's telling Rey to look into herself. To search her feelings. She's the one who says her parents are nobody. He's not lying to her, he's helping her admit to something she's always known.

It just doesn't feel like a trick to me. Rey's very strong in the Force. So is Luke. So is Yoda. We get no indication from any of them or even the Force pit/cave that Rey is descended from any bloodline that we know so far. Surely, with Yoda's whole "there is another" in Empire that if Rey was someone connected to a bloodline, he would have made some equally cryptic comment to Luke, no? All he says is that Luke can lose Ben/Kylo but he must not lose Rey. I guess we can bend that to meaning "because she's a secret Kenobi and that's more important than anything else." But the scene just didn't read that way to me.

There is wiggle room, of course. But I think it'll feel way more like a cheat if they turn her into someone in 9. What they have right now is beautiful and poetic and lovely. It's inspirational and it connects with so many viewers.

Yup. The Snoke stuff was always absurd. He never needed to be anyone either.

And he (Snoke) is scarier precisely because he could be anyone.

Serkis does a great job in that throne room scene. He's rehashing the emperor's greatest hits, but with even more casual disdain for the other players in the room. And the theater's reaction when Kylo kills him - it just exploded. He basically created that monster in the course of one scene, since who cared in the TFA.

I love that Snoke is so powerful in the Force but he's still not powerful enough to get to Skywalker. He can't see where he is. He's powerful enough to created a Force bridge between Kylo and Rey but not to make one of his own between himself and Luke. And he's obsessed with (and I think terrified of) Luke Skywalker. Even with all his incredible power he can't even find, let alone defeat, Luke.

Meanwhile, Luke is so powerful in the Force that not only can he create a Force bridge, he can project himself across the galaxy to another place and appear as a real person. That's absolutely amazing. People wanted Luke to be the most powerful Jedi we've ever seen. And we got exactly that. Perhaps not in the way any of us imagined or expected. But it happened. I fucking love that so much.

People can be upset at Rey having seemingly "advanced" power all they want. But Luke is still far more powerful. So was Snoke, to that end.

I think that is absurd. The leader of the galaxy is no one, with no story, and dies without any fight. Makes the plot paper thin.

Without a doubt, Disney will be not happy with the fan reaction and have Abrams right in that Rey is Ren's cousin's sister's boyfriend's ex-roommate.
