this, pretty much.

they could keep it cheap on their end.. release it digitally at first, then follow up by offering a "super terrific happy deluxe" version on cd/vinyl. the jamily-types would eat it up.

it might not be insane money, but it would be a decent payday i would imagine. and, it would also send a signal to the world saying "hey, remember us? yea, we're still a band, and keep that in mind for when we tour again".

music for us, money and a bump in relevance for them.

agreed. and considering they can practically sell out shows without the support of a new album, what's the value in spending money in the studio and pressing albums other than artistic expression for them at this point.

Nah they still need a producer, an engineer, assistants, plus mixing and mastering. Considering they work with established pros, I’d say they’re still looking at a minimum of $20K considering their recording pace. Possibly quite more if they’ve got BOB and/or Bob Ludwig

But what do you think of the notion that money in the music industry these days is to be made by touring, merchandising, and tv/movie placement?

I subscribe to the Steve Albini outlook: the idea that record companies should make money hand over fist for physical media is a very recent and short-lived concept, really just prominent from like the 1950s to 1999. Prior to that they sold sheet music, and prior to that it was all made through live performances. We’re just conditioned to it because we grew up with it.

Jeff and Stone made albums pretty much by themselves. And both Moonlander and Heaven-Hell sound way better than Avocado, Backspacer or LB.

I would be stunned if they had enough worthwhile material for a "Lost Dogs 2," and it's probably to their credit that they haven't tried to release one. I'd suspect things like "Cold Confession" and "Let it Ride" are the exception.
