I'm not surprised. The band put out a scented candle years ago, and I feel like there's been some other weird merch the last few years, too, but I can't recall for sure.

How about hiring a new drummer and putting out some new music.

The situation with Orri, the drummer, is an obstacle to new music, yes, but additionally the band have been battling accusations of tax fraud in Iceland since 2019. I think two cases have been dismissed, but the Icelandic government appealed the decision in the most recent one and the defense expenses are starting to impact the members' personal finances.

The Icelandic government should be treating them like the national treasure they are and fuck off about their taxes.

I've seen others share that same sentiment. I guess the current Icelandic government and court system have come under international criticism for the way they operate, but it sounds like some entrenchment has occurred due to economic woes.

Jónsi has. He's been living in Los Angeles for a while now. From my understanding, though, the taxes in question are from years past, 2011-2014, I think, and they have to prove that they paid the correct amount and that their accountant incorrectly filed paperwork. I've heard that the accountant they used was less-than-fluent in Icelandic which contributed to the problem, but it's hard to find up-to-date information on the situation.

but why is that stopping them from releasing new stuff? jonsi released his album last year, and they continue to peddle stuff like perfume. so I’m not sure why the tax stuff from 6 years ago which only involves a three-year window would be an impediment.

I'm not an expert on the situation, by any means, but as I stated, there is financial strain at play. The government froze the assets of the band in Iceland, including houses and apartments that they owned. That might have included their studio, if they still have it, and I don't know if that asset freeze is still in effect as if this date.

Of the two members still active in the band, Georg has a wife and kids, and supposedly they had to sell their home earlier this year to continue paying for his legal defense. So I don't know if the band could even afford to record music at the moment if they even have anything written. I know they played a handful of new songs live since 2016, but I haven't been keeping up with all the remixes and whatnot.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if they're done with the band, but just don't want to put it to bed for some reason. I'd be stoked for new stuff, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've listened to it top to bottom once now. Mostly instrumental. Some spots almost have a Brian Eno feel to 'em. Longest track comes in at almost 13mins.

This would probably be awesome to listen to while watching the aurora borealis.

Nice. I really need to give these chaps a discog dive. I know that I have not spent enough of my life listening to Sigur Ros.
