the night king is obviously a targaryen, because he can control a dragon (dead or not).

and because no good villain(s) can be written without motive, the night king doesn't just want to kill the living, he wants what everyone else in that world wants: the throne.

and he wants the throne because he used to have it, because he is (a version of) aerys targaryen, the mad king.

and before one might think, "no, that can't be, because the night king existed generations before aerys lived," let's remember that the timeline of that world doesn't follow the linear sort of rules we might want to impose on it.

we've already seen how time in that world bends, particularly in ways that are recursive, i.e, in ways that make the past an explanation of the present vis-a-vis ways that make the present make sense of the past.

"hold the door, hold the door, hold the door . . ."

so yeah: the lannisters fucked up majorly (jaime having killed aerys and all), but let's move past blame because what's done is done.

so if that's where i'm sure, let me also share where i gamble: how it actually ends.

jon and deanerys.

the former will wind up a reanimated corpse (white walker) like any other, a slave to loyalty and to honor (whatever that means). this will happen early and last long enough for us all to move through shock, grief, and acceptance.

the latter, though, will be captured, alive, and thus have a modicum of agency.

the night king will keep deanerys (his daughter) at his side. and she will immediately play/exist by his side the way she played/existed by her brother's. we'll be sad for it, but we will hold out hope.

and we will know that she isn't a puppet, deep down, that she's there and biding time only because of her dragon (or maybe, by then, dragonS). we'll remember that she survived abuse and that she fought on the side of slaves. we'll remember that the gravest error people make is underestimating her.

and then.

she will wake Jon Snow. *something* will happen that will break the night king's spell over him--not all white walkers, but him in particular--the same way something happened that changed Drogo way back when (lol, remember? I think that "something" was sex).

and then Jon Snow will slay the Night King, the way Drogo killed Viserys, in front of Deanerys and in service of them both. And with fire.

And Jon will stay a white walker. He will remain "ice." And Deanerys will (always) be fire. And she'll sit in that throne and he'll stand by the side of it.

There. Fini.

The whole White Walker thing has always been the least interesting part of this whole story to me. I'd be pretty stoked if they're no longer a part of this after S8E3.

My dad mentioned something that I had yet to hear, which might just mean that I don't spend enough time on the internet. But he asked that, if the Night King can ride Viserion, does that make him a Targaryan? I know he "raised" it, but is riding a zombie dragon different than whatever it is they do to control the wights? It doesn't just move at his command, it seems to respond to him, spitting out blue fire and shit when he needs the wall to come down.

I have a friend on Facebook whose theory is that the Night King is actually the Mad King. I have to find it and post it here; it's insane.
