Just was pondering who was the best "Thinking Man's Rock Band". Devo and R.E.M. were the first to come to mind.

Whatever pops in to your mind when your you hear "Thinking Person's Rock".

I myself discount anything labelled as Prog. I listen to it once in a while but it seems its far too indulgent at times, bordering some kind of classical music rather than rock.
I'm thinking more along the lines of college rock of the 80's, something that has its roots in rock but took it in an arty direction. Perhaps The Velvet Underground is the answer as just about every alternative band cited them as an influence.
