I may bother with more thoughts tomorrow, but the beginning was a jumbled mess. And perhaps because of lowered expectations, overall I thought it recovered to being mostly solid.

The Last Jedi and Rogue One are both leaps and bounds better

Spoiler: show
1) This movie is trash.
2) They overreacted to the Last Jedi reaction and took a cowardly approach to the story by shitting all over Rian Johnson’s choices.
3) Rian Johnson shouldn’t have been allowed to make the movie he did. They had to force two movies worth of plot into Rise.
4) I love Last Jedi and it will be the lasting positive memory I have of this franchise. Along with Rogue One and Solo, I really thought we were in store for a truly great series of films for the next decade. Throw that out the window.
5) Kylo is responsible for millions of deaths, killed his father, and tried to kill his mom. Hey, let’s make out.
6) I reserve the right to change my mind on all of this after I see Rise a second time tomorrow night.

Starting the movie where they did was a grievous error.

Fuck anyone saying this throws Rian or last Jedi under a bus.

It totally honours that film and is born of it. Completely. In the best way possible.

And don’t get me started on Rey’s golden “Let’s Make A Design Decision Solely To Sell More Toys” lightsaber. (Though I recognize this whole franchise was basically created to sell toys, many of which are currently filling all manner of shelves, bins and floor space in my house.)

Perfectly stated in the Polygon review:
But having the people in charge of Star Wars’ legacy acknowledging their own inability to move forward is a sad way for the story to end. Even as The Rise of Skywalker’s characters claim their ultimate triumph, the film feels clumsy, hurried, and above all, like an admission of creative defeat.

-this jumped from action sequence to action sequence too much
-there’s no reason for Rey to kiss Ben
-the ending shot on Tatooine was beautiful with that score and had me tearing up
