1.0 out of 5 stars My Dad is Out of Control, October 30, 2013

By Robert M. Flynn "Farmer Ted" (Albany, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lightning Bolt (Audio CD)

My dad is out of control. I can't stand it anymore. All the dude plays is Pearl Jam.
Pearl Jam in the car. At home. Pearl Jam T-Shirts. (He used to make me wear them...uggg.)
Pearl Jam discussions. Pearl Jam coffee. Pearl Jam license plate. (PJ10Vedr)

I can't stand it. I love him and stuff, but he's really hard to be around.
I embarrassed to have him drive me and my friends places.
He always pops in Pearl Jam or puts it on the stupid Pearl Jam station.
Like anyone needs Pearl Jam 24/7. But people do...like my dad.

He thinks he's getting music cred by playing it. My friends are polite, but it's very embarrassing.
They are all like, "Dude, your dad's music sucks. What's up with that lead singer? He's always Yaaarling and Groaning...and the songs have no melody. Your dad's music sucks."

"I know," I say. "But your dad listens to Phish...so...."

It's bad, and a lot of my friends have similar problems with their dads being mad wack.

I have one whose dad just plays Dave Matthews all the time. Or the one who plays Phish. That really sucks. That guitar dudes solos grate on my ears. Makes me wanna vomit. They go nowhere fast. I guess people are into dudes who play fast??? Can't forget the Rush dad....wow...horrible.

I'm not alone, but sometimes I feel like I am.

This new album came in the mail. (My dad still buys music.)
And he is reenergized with Pearl Jam love.
It's almost unbearable. He had a listening party at his house with all of his friends.
They think they know a lot about music because they are into Pearl Jam.
Try to pass it off on me...it's pathetic.

They all got drunk and I went upstairs to surf the net.
They all started playing their favorite Pearl Jam songs.
"Daughter" came on and they all sang it at the top of their lungs.
So pathetic....It's a horrible song. Who writes songs about people with learning disabilities?
Yo. I got this sweet song. It's about a girl with LD. Cool. Not.
And here are these grown men singing about this...
Why? I can't even fathom. The song is so wack. It must give them something missing in their lives.

They partied all night. It was their Wild Hogs moment. I hope they had fun.

When I woke up in the morning, I head music coming from the bathroom downstairs. I walked by and saw my father standing in front of the mirror with a radio on singing "Nothing Man" as he stared at himself. WTF?

It's just been absolutely terrible. And my dad started liking Pearl Jam in 1993. For 20 years they have been his favorite band. He really doesn't listen to anything else. He may listen to some U2, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, or Black Crows...but 95% of the time it's Pearl Jam. I usually get bored of band after a couple of months. I like to explore and taste the world. Not my dad. Pearl Jam forever.

When I was a baby, I didn't even like music. I would cry when the teacher started to play the piano for sing alongs in kindergarten. I thought she would start Yarllling and Grunting and Growiling. It took years of reconditioning for my ears to accept music. All because my dad wouldn't stop listing to dumb Pearl Jam.

So. If you like Pearl Jam, buy this album. It will fulfill you delusion. Have fun with it. Run with it. Pearl Jam for life. I don't care.
I love my dad. He's been pretty cool to me and my mom and sister. I'm pretty lucky.
I wish he would give Pearl Jam a rest tough because, inadvertently I end up listening to way more Pearl Jam then is ever needed. And their bland, faux rock and roll dulls my world. And makes me seasick.

I just wish he were into cooler music.

Maybe someday I'll be the same.

But I doubt it.
Ha I can only imagine. I know when I was 18 I was that guy. You cannot force your joy of a certain band on your kids or friends. Play it in the car and sing along, but your passion for the band should never overwhelm the development of your child. It is almost like demanding your kid becomes a doctor or coal miner like dad. They are just going to battle against. It. Especially if your passion is more prevalent then the amount of time you spend with your kid or loved ones in a more natural setting.

It is your passion, and it is completely cool to share it with those you love. But never force it on them. My mom never demanded that I enjoy Barbara Streisand or musicals, but I was constantly stuck in the car listening to them. But out of that I ended up enjoying films like West Side Story, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music. If she had straight up demanded me to love them I probably never would have enjoyed them. I still despise Streisand, but some of it rubbed off on me. And my mom likes a half dozen PJ songs because I would play around her, and did not demand her to appreciate them.

I especially enjoyed this passage:

They think they know a lot about music because they are into Pearl Jam.

Eddie Vedder wrote: The child in that song obviously has a learning difficulty. And it's only in the last few years that they've actually been able to diagnose these learning disabilities that before were looked at as misbehavior, as just outright rebelliousness. But no one knew what it was. And these kids, because they seemed unable or reluctant to learn, they'd end up getting the s--t beaten outta them. The song ends, you know, with this idea of the shades going down so that the neighbors can't see what happens next. What hurts about s--t like that is that it ends up defining peoples' lives. They have to live with that abuse for the rest of their lives. Good, creative people are just f--king destroyed."

Good quote. Was that from Ed? He's right. There's so much stigma and ignorance surrounding learning disabilities. I don't think there's anything wrong with the sentiment in the song.

My two year old loves the first two seconds of all the songs. However, he says "Per Jam!" only when Getaway is played.

after the bridge, we all know that the best part of every pearl jam song is the first 2 seconds.

I've always thought that it'd be great if the bootlegs were just the "bwaaaaaaaaaaaa let's all hit our instruments and cymbals like that was something epic" moment that they seem to punctuate every single song with. Like Neil's Arc, but extra stupid.

I remember a few months ago Amazon was highlighting all of the funny fake reviews their customers had created. This guy must to be one of them. Here is another review he did for Yield, not quite as good though:

What in tarnation?, August 8, 2013
This review is from: Yield (Audio CD)
I was camping with some bros.
And this bro said that he was really into Pearl Jam.
Like it was a real thing to say.
To be taken seriously.

I was like "What dude?"
No one really like Pearl Jam.

But I guess people do.
And they think it's sophisticated to be a Pearl Jam fan.

They put this album on and played it.
I listened to it.

It was one of the worst things I've ever heard. I actually couldn't believe how bland and plodding it sounded.
In a world of many wonders and wonderful music....why? Why would anyone listen to Pearl Jam?

What makes people like Pearl Jam? Does it remind them of a time in their lives when they first found love? Does it remind them of the sweet 90s?
If this album was done by another band with a different name would they like it?

Why don't they still like Ugly Kid Joe?

What is it about Pearl Jam that makes people like them? Seriously?
It's not the music. Is it The Ved's powerful voice?

I'm not too sure, but it is fascinating that a band this horrible in every way from it's name to its sound can have so many fans.

When someone say they like Pearl Jam I feel sorry for them.
It's too bad.

But then I got to thinking...Maybe liking Pearl Jam is like being loyal to a sports team. You root for your team. I've been a New York Giants fan since I was born. I'm loyal to them even when they are terrible. Maybe it's something like that.

Team Pearl Jam.

The funny thing about Pearl Jam fans is that they all seem to be dudes. Like Bro-Wave dudes. Dudes who don't read. Dudes with no style.

And the thing is they don't even realize what Pearl Jam actually is...

Listening to the over dramatic lyrics to the songs on this album was painful. Backed by the bland music made for a horrible listening experience.

I can figure out Pearl Jam. They are the worst product of American Music and a sad reflection of our rotting culture.

Pearl Jam is for Simpletons.

I feel bad for all the youngsters now who have to ride around in the back seats of cars while their dads or uncles play Pearl Jam. They must be getting car sick. Hating their fathers and uncles. Wanting to vomit. And hating music and life. It's just wrong.

If you are a wife of a Pearl Jam fan. Have a talk with your husband and demand that he stop poisoning your children's ears. I feel sorry for you.

And youngsters reading this review. Do yourself a huge favor...don't listen to Pearl Jam...don't do it. You'll thank me.

Below are some entry level albums that you should seek out instead:

1.) Velvet Underground and Nico
2.) Piper at the Gates of Dawn
3.) Dolittle - The Pixies
4.) Master of Reality - Black Sabbath
5.) Slanted and Enchanted - Pavement
6.) You're Living All Over Me - Dinosaur Jr.
7.) Putrifiers II - Thee Oh Sees
8.) Ziggy Satardust - David Bowie
9.) Everybody Knows this is Nowhere - Neil Young
10.) Bee Thousand - Guided by Voices

Just say no to Pearl Jam!!!!!!!!

True story, at an Ed solo show in 2008 in Chicago, a fat dude in jean shorts and a Chicago Bears t-shirt who was sitting next to me challenged me to leave the venue with him and fight cause I was "dressed like some emo faggot" and obviously wasn't "a real Vedder fan" like him.

Certainly sounds as if someone was struggling with their sexual identity.... Did you fight him?
