I'm actually going to agree with the cub fan on most of this last 2 pages...

Definitely no reason to sign Arrieta to a new deal now, with a year and a half to go, and him breaking the 30 year old mark.
Best thing that happened to the Brewers was Sabathia and Greinke turning down those contracts.

I agree on Arrieta kind of. He was a talented guy but this came out of nowhere to me, and I keep expecting him to falter but have been wrong so far.

Also the Cubs/Tigers aren't in the same place. When the Tigers signed Verlander they were in the midst of a window of opportunity to win now, and you could see that window would be closing sooner rather than later.

The Cubs right now are built for the long term, there's no reason to mortgage the future and sign a win now deal.

Exactly. The Cubs can afford to wait and see and hedge their bets a bit more. Additionally, the additional 3-5 million a year that the market seems to add each off season is less likely to strain their budget in the mid term because so much of their talent is under club control for so long. The Tigers were facing all their top players coming up within 2 years of each other.

That still doesn't explain the Verlander extension with 2 years remaining. While top-of-the-rotation starters are not always fungible, the Tigers would've been in no worse position, and would've been in a better one, had they waited. Teams quantify the law of diminishing returns all the time. The Tigers seemed to panic and think if they didn't extend him 2 years early, someone else would've 2 years later. In their situation, unless they were certain to lose him, that's not a real inherent risk.

Was it really the best thing that happened to the Brewers, though? If they had Sabathia the first 3 years of that contract they might have a World Series right now.

Anyone else play Beat the Streak? I just got up to 20 and this is the best I've ever done.

Im just going to say it now. The Tigers should sign Micheal Fulmer to a 15 year 450 million dollar deal right this very minute.

Yeah, you're right. I just seem to always go 1 and 1 when I double down. I'll do it early in a streak but once I've got 4 or 5 in a row I stick with single picks.

Was it really the best thing that happened to the Brewers, though? If they had Sabathia the first 3 years of that contract they might have a World Series right now.

I would assume, if they had signed Sabathia, they might not have taken on Greinke and Marcum? (not sure how much they ended up paying both for the 2 years) but they would have had a TON of money tied up with CC, Braun, and Fielder. If they couldnt break through with Yo, Grienke, and Marcum, Its hard to see them doing it with CC, Yo, and whomever number 3 would be. Infact, they were below .500 the 2 seasons after Sabathia.

I always felt bad for Sheets, the team finally got good, and he had nothing left after pitching on some HORRIBLE teams
