Nah, those just aren't very good films. Don't blame the genre.
Verm, now I'm serious here... I'm going to list my favorite "horror" films. Forget whether or not they are actually "horror" films and just appreciate that I like them and that they scare me... and recommend to me, honestly, three other "horror" films I should watch. Okay?
1. The Omen (1976) -- I have no interest in the latest remake
2. The Shining -- scares the constant shit out of me every time I watch it.
3. The Exorcist (1973) -- I'm terrified of the Devil, I guess.
4. Rosemary's Baby
5. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
I second The House of the Devil. It's a fantastic movie and I think you would like it. If you do, then also check out Ti West's follow-up film, The Innkeepers. Both of these movies scare the shit out of me.
Based on that list, you seem to gravitate toward horror centered around families. Have you seen Hellraiser? If not, definitely watch it.
I don't know how you feel about modern supernatural horror, but I could see you enjoying Insidious, The Conjuring, or Oculus. They're sort of the contemporary equivalent of the family-based horror of films like The Omen or The Shining.
I saw Hellraiser a long LONG time ago. I don't remember much about it but I remember that I really liked it at the time.
You really liked Oculus, right? Maybe I'll try that one. Insidious looked terrible but I try not to let previews dictate too much.
I'm a big fan of both Oculus and Insidious. However, The Conjuring might be the most up your alley. It's a bit more old-fashioned, and it's extremely well-directed. Plus, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Vera Farmiga, and Ron Livingston.
Really?
That's kind of a ridiculous cast.

It was a pretty big hit. And yes, the cast is stellar. It terrified me, but I have some issues with the final act. But you may not share them.

He sure is! He is also in Insidious 2 and the upcoming sequel to The Conjuring (all of these are made by the same director).

Shit that happens tonight doesnt it! Man alive. Extra hour of sleep will be real nice. I went to Leon Bridges show in Denver. I ended up mixing too many types of alcoholic beverages.
Show was incredible though. Wonderful fella.

Yes, I don't care for it. I think Gans's Silent Hill is a great film, though.
