You could at least not be a complete inconsiderate dick and use the spoiler tag.
Most here still haven’t seen it.

Well sure. You couldn't just ignore it. You had to come up with some throwaway lines to try to connect the two movies and make it make sense (like that "Holdo maneuver" crap. i still have no idea how someone thought that would explain it away).
- Spoiler: show
- 1. The connection between Kylo and Rey, that means that they see each other and communicate even when they are not in the same room or planet. Established in TLJ.
2. Light skipping. Established in TLJ.
3. Luke in the Yoda role on Ahch-To. It's not revolutionary, but the scenes have a very similar feel and weight.
4. Rey using Luke's ship. Established in TFA.
5. The hate between Rey and Hux. Established in both TFA and TLJ.
6. Leia's role in the resistance, the gravity of her dying, the connection between her and Kylo. Established in both TFA and TLJ.
7. Han and Kylo. Fantastic scene. Established in TFA.
8. The resistance calling out for help from all corners of the galaxy. Established in TLJ.
9. Luke's development throughout TLJ, realizing he was wrong. Established in TLJ.
10. Finn's devotion to Rey. Established in TFA.
There are so many red threads throughout the sequels, this was just a quick top ten list written while at work.

You don't understand what I'm saying. I'm saying none of this was purposefully foreshadowed in the previous movies. The writers of this one desperately went to work trying to wrap this thing up.
Obviously I'm not saying that this movie just had a bunch of random shit in it that was never mentioned in the previous movies. Except Palpatine, because Palpatine was most definitely NOT originally in this story.

Yes, I guess I'm not getting what you are saying, because throwaway lines connecting the two movies doesn't ring true for me. I think TROS is a direct product from what happened in TFA and TLJ, and although highly subjective on this coming bit; I thought it was excellent, and that they did a good job.

My previous post should say "Palpatine was most definitely NOT originally in this story." i missed a word there.
---------------------------
Most movie sequels aren't part of some grand scheme. They don't have to be, but to say that this trilogy was planned out all along or that seeds were planted in the previous movies to serve this one is madness. If JJ did have an idea where the trilogy should go, Rian certainly ignored it.
This isn't a work of brilliantly complex plotting across three movies that hides little bits throughout the movies that were intended to pay off in the end, when viewers suddenly realize that the elements were there all along. It's a desperate attempt to fix all of Abrams's stupid mystery boxes and deal with Rian going off on his own.
They had no idea what to do after TLJ, there was never any plan, and heads will roll at Disney because of it.

What was planned all along, and what came true in TROS are two completely different things. One is something you can only speculate on, and one is what you see in the cinemas this week.
Disney/Lucasfilm could have had a full vision set out from the start, a full plan in what they wanted from the three movies, and it might have ended up being a better product. They might even say that they did, but I speculate that they gave the directors a lot of creative freedom to divert from that. I think there we have some common ground in the way we look at it.
Nevertheless, they ended up with a really strong movie, that took the strenghts from the previous two movies and built on it. Well done.

"The dark force from critics isn’t keeping Disney’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker down with the Lucasfilm finale to the George Lucas-created saga seeing between $44M-$48M per Deadline sources tonight.
At that level, Rise of Skywalker will wind up being either the third or fourth best preview night ever with the current top three being last April’s Avengers: Endgame ($60M), 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($57M) and 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($45M). Again these figures do not come from Disney, but are from our own sources. Disney could come in lower or higher than what we’re seeing by daylight."

Anything's possible, but based on what I just saw (and what I've heard), it's painfully obvious that there was no grand plan, and few of the pieces fit together in the end. Opinions!
I kind of respect Disney for giving the directors so much freedom, and I kind of respect RJ for taking every bit of freedom and doing what he wanted without care for anything else, but holy fuck. He really made no attempt to bridge the gap to the next one (or the first one for that matter).

More could probably have been done in TLJ to set up the new movie, but JJ took that and created a highly entertaining Star Wars film, filled with references and the ongoing story from TFA and TLJ.

So strange.
Jj left Rian almost nowhere to go especially with regards Luke. Rian chose the best way out to Luke especially and left all the space possible at the end of that film for the next writer to work in. Completely blank canvass. And jj filled it completely.
I’m not sure what people want. This is not only pure Star Wars, it’s Star Wars on steroids.
It has everything. And it needs everything as the final one.

I think Luke in TLJ could have gone differently, and still ended up in a similar place at the end. Based on TFA: That he had given up hope when he went to Ahch-To was obvious. That he'd end up the grand ole man and eventually dead ala Obi Wan, was the most likely. But I don't think the Luke we meet at the beginning of TLJ is the most logical place for him to be, especially based on the OT. (yes, many years have passed, but these are the follow up pictures)
I fully agree that TROS is pure Star Wars. Based on where we were after TFA and TLJ, I think JJ knocked it out of the park.

Well it goes back to why jj didn’t have him in tfa. In his own words he took over the whole thing and the audience would just be watching him and the new characters get lost. And it’s their story. Not his anymore. That’s kinda the point.

Obi-Wan in A New Hope does that perfectly though, and we all know that the people behind Star Wars are not afraid to rethread old ground.

I don't want Star Wars on steroids. I want a good, sensible story in the Star Wars universe. I want fan service to be "hey here's a Loth Cat" in passing as a reward for knowing Rebels. I don't need

So much of this movie is the toxic fan service. Shit, Landoo was basically Dr. Hibbard

- Rey's lineage within this saga needed to be connected. Not because you can't be poor or "nobody" and be a jedi or be strong with the force, but because of what Rey does and what TFA builds her up as (the way she was left on Jakku, her connection with Kylo etc), and because this is the Skywalker saga. Just look at the PT and the OT.

You can't make a ninth episode/chapter of something, and not connect it to the past 8 episodes/chapters. Thankfully JJ knows this, and handled it brilliantly.
