Why hasn’t anyone (Jon or Dany) thought of going to the night kings lair and destroying the henge of standing crystals with the altar in the Center? The one back in season four when he turns the baby. Maybe that’s where his power comes from?

And what’s the point in turning a baby? It can’t grow up then can it?

That scene where we apparently see the Night King turning a baby into a White Walker in the Lands of Always Winter does not have an analogue in the book--up until the final published (final?) book in the series, we haven't seen anything like that because we can't, as every chapter is the POV of a human character, so there would be no way to observe the scene. There is also no character that matches up with the Night King exactly (although there is a Night's King).

Perhaps the Others' powers do come from someplace else in the books, but in the show I think we are meant to assume that it arises out of the same naturalistic magic/religion that powered the Children and is known to the Northerners as the Old Gods. The arrangement of those stones in the far, far north is meant to evoke the shapes the Children arranged their stones in during the White Walker creation scene (just as the way the White Walkers' arrangement of bodies does), even though we were still two seasons away from seeing it. The Children screwed up and created a race of beings that is just as powerful as them but is driven by revenge as opposed to the unselfish (to the point of unfeeling) stewardship that the Children represent.

I still don't understand why Bran just doesn't pull his three-eyed raven trick of looking into the past to see how the white walkers were defeated the first go around.

also, i missed it (and it's probably been explained before), but did the walkers just hibernate for 1000 years? how did they come back? were they buried in ice (I think I remember reading this somewhere)? were they really defeated the first time if they were able to resurrect themselves?
