I made a Indy thread so we could give this back to Tom Cruise.

So I recently rewatched the first five MI movies on 4K, and came away more nervous than ever about Fallout, because Rogue Nation is the only one of the first five that I dislike. In fact, I think it’s kind of a disaster. I found it cold, soulless, and detached, with TERRIBLE exposition scenes of the most boring kind, dumb meta “exploration” of the IMF being “outdated” (just like Skyfall addressing the Bond franchise’s reputation for sexism/chauvinism, expect it doesn’t even make sense here because the MI movies have no such reputation), and full of callous, empty violence and death. McQuarrie is such a bad fit for this franchise; his cool, calculated style was perfect for the brutal, neo-noir slickness of Jack Reacher, but feels all wrong here. The set pieces and action are forgettable. Nothing works. I really did not like this movie.

Current ranking:

Ghost Protocol
III
Mission: Impossible
II

Rogue Nation

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Rogue Nation is awesome. One of the greatest spy and action thrillers of our time.
Fallout is more impressive in the action scenes though.

tragabigzanda wrote:totally agree about Rogue Nation being cold and detached. the new on plays off Ethan's age, and it's wired into the DNA of the script and Cruise's performance. It's a huge improvement over the last movie.
I liked the last one too. But, yeah, loved how they weaved Ethan’s age into his expressions throughout this movie.

I think I want to go see this again.

Before Mission Impossible 6, I had never watched a movie more than once. I have now watched Mission Impossible 6 twelve times. Take me now, death, I do not fear you. For my eyes have basked in the glory of Mission Impossible 6 and I know nothing in life will ever be better.

to clarify, i'm not sure 6 is even the second best in the series. rather, the things that it does well have basically never been put to film. there are sequences that are truly amazing.

I'm debating seeing this again in the cinema. I really, really enjoyed this one.

2 is the only standout bad movie in this series for me. (Although Tom’s hair is really amazing in this one.)

yep and yep.

outside of the obsolete tech, 2 is the only one that feels super dated in a cultural sense. like woo directing a classy limp bizkit video.

Image

but movie star hair has never looked better.

Mindless. Awful.

And then Tom cruise. Just to drive ithe awful home.

I normally don’t even comment on stuff I don’t like, I don’t like to give it time or disrupt a conversation but Jesus Christ just go set off some fireworks up cats asses in your back garden and you’d get the same effect. Whizz bang action. No substance. Awful guilt for having done it.

Why the fu k does Tom cruise have a career? He’s a talentless stupid prick.
