It was seeing Heathen in this thread that tipped me off. I was wondering when he had returned.

The important thing is that somewhere he is just a little bit pleased that, thanks to him, I preserved just a little bit of my dignity.

The second half of the song is the best half.

For me, worst Pearl Jam song ever. I didn't vote in the poll because I don't even want to give it one star.

As I wrote elsewhere
Nothing As It Seems. A band with the confidence to leave space, to let the room speak. This song, no the recording has gravitas. The vocals are how Ed should age. He knows the range for this song. He doesn't reach when he doesn't need to. He can't really, to do so would be against the song.

Let's talk about Matt. This track has Pearl Jam's greatest snare sound. There's a tolling to it that matches the dirge of Stone's ever steady death march. It matches Mike's coil reverb. It heralds in the China cymbal. This snare ties the track together with heavy chains. The percussive choices made in pre production for this track probably outweigh all the band's input on Backspacer or LBolt. Matt cared. He was as invested in this session as he was with SuperUnknown, another fine example of drum and snare sounds, maybe the best example of the last 25 years.

Mike shines here. It'd be a fine song without him but his contribution sends this out of the stratosphere. There's thought, there's feeling, there's string noise and amp noise. There's no finer example of his playing on record. Sure he's hit cleaner notes, sure he's played some patterns but where is the feeling? It's here in spades.

And ever present behind all of this is Jeff and Stone laying a foundation that is rolling in swampy murkiness, a smoky inability to focus, to swim against this rip is futile so let go and just feel.

There's no other song like this track. It is my favourite now having recently wrested pole position from Tremor Christ, another that takes the best of each member to unfathomable heights.

Everyone on this board should have this Brad comp for NAIS alone (so so jealous Brad). In fact get both of these. The Friends at High Tide version is Amazing

I love NAIS from Touring Band 2000 with the vocal effect put on "whisper through a megaphone"

It just gets better with time, trending ever upward from when I first heard it as kind of boring, slow and washed out to it now being a consistent favorite on Binaural and in the catalog as a whole.

My favorite version is from Cardiff 2000, only time they used as an opener. Mike is great there.

5 stars song, but thats not something that I can listen everyday.
