Lately, when breaking news hits, I've been far more interested in shuffling through various news and commentary sites to see how they report it than the news itself. The narratives that form almost immediately are amazing to watch, as is seeing what each side leaves out.

 Once you get passed the hyperbolic headlines, I find the stories to be well-reasoned arguments.

I do not read widely enough to have a well-founded position on this, but damn if the Economist doesn't position itself as THE voice of conventional wisdom. Maybe its just that British English, but they never state their position without grounding it well within what the proper people think.

I've been really into The Atlantic for the last year or so. Their website used to be absolute shite, super complicated and overwhelming, so I never looked at it. Then they fixed that, pared it down, and they've been easily my favorite news-magazine site for a while now. New site design debuted today and I don't know how I feel about it. I think it's def down from the last version, but still OK.

The New Yorker has a better site and is better at resisting the impulse of allowing every single one of its goddamn writers to write about the same goddamn big story of the day. The Atlantic falls prey to that all the time. Like today, The New Yorker had maybe three stories about the Mueller appointment. One of those was a piece where four or five writers each gave a two-paragraph hot take. OK, fine. The Atlantic had probably a dozen pieces about the same thing. It's unnecessary.

My news cycle usually starts with flicking through the NYT headlines. If something stands out, I'll read it, but I usually don't dwell too long. Then I go to Politico and open a shit ton of tabs and read/skim through them all. It's not the brainiest source out there, but I get off on the politics bullshit, what can I say. The I go to The Atlantic, same thing---shit ton of tabs. Then The New Yorker---not really a shit ton of tabs because their site is smaller, but usually there are a few good ones each morning. This process usually takes about an hour total. I'll check back in on NYT and Google News periodically through the day.
