Slowly obtaining my Man Card.

Clogged kitchen sink and disposal last night. Youtubed a solution. Took apart my P-trap pipe and found that a glob of grease had accumulated over time and was blocking the waters path. Cleaned it out, and put it back together. In college I probably would have called the maintenance guy.

A few months ago it was a broken door handle! I can't wait till more shit breaks again! I love this stuff!

I was putting crown molding onto a valance I built in my basement and I made the mistake of asking the HD employees how far down the wall the molding went as I needed it cover up 2.5". I may as well have asked them to construct a unified field theory that explained gravity.

I sort of feel bad for them because I'm sure they get a million random questions, but sometimes they don't even know where the paint section is.

Has anyone ever constructed a countertop, or techinically a really large shelf? I'm looking at making a countertop in our laundry room (which is essentially a large closet that's about 80"x45" that will sit on ledges around the walls (with a brace in the middle to prevent sagging). The washer/dryer would be underneath it. What would be the best type of wood for this? I was originally considering MDF, but was worried about it swelling being so close to laundry. But i don't really see any huge water disasters happening on a levitating shelf counter?? The other option I was considering was building a counter with 1x12 boards that were glued together and try to make them look as seamless as possible.

One details is that I will be cutting some holes into the counter to allow for the vertical dryer vent, as well as a space in the back for an electrical socket and the hoses to get behind the washer.

I've read a few horror stories about painting MDF, with lots of steps. If i did the boards, I would probably stain them, but not ruling out paint (haven't decided on those details)

Any time I have used MDF to make anything (two different types of free-standing shelves) it has been a disaster. That's all I'll say about that.

That seems to be a reoccurring theme I've read about MDF. Might just get some boards and glue them together. I think it's more fail proof for someone who doesn't know what they're doing, versus dealing with MDF.

finally got around to fixing my deck. replaced two rotted boards, sanded the others between pretty good and half-assed, and then used the behr deckover product to paint the thing. bought a little rod iron table and chairs, and today we ate outside on the deck for the first time in 2 years. it was a shitload of work that i wish i had done last summer.

We painted our deck with the Behr Deck Over paint earlier this summer. It looks great. Huge improvement over the no paint and carpenter bee holes. Easy to clean too.
