I hope this gets picked up by my town's new drive-in theater!

True that it's no extra cost but they are also trying to entice new subscribers. Still, I agree, I don't know how the numbers work for them.
For starters, HBO must be paying a mint for the rights to stream.

Then I suppose they are trying to keep the momentum of the DC franchise going, so may be willing to take a bit of profit hit to keep their superheroes visible.

And also gotta think it also serves as one big ad for merchandising.

I guess, but HBO Max is owned by Warner, so maybe it's a bit like transferring money from your checking to your savings account

Nevermind that first bit. TW owns HBO.

My guess is they are paying interest to their debtors for the cost of the movie so waiting is costing them millions that at some point (already?) will put them past a break even point....the advertisers they had contracts with already put out their WW'84 Twinkies or whatever during the past start stops with the movie....if they release it this year they can write some of it off. They need content for HBO Max. All wild speculation.

Plus, every person that subscribes to HBO Max and either chooses to stick around or forgets to cancel is a regular revenue stream.

Also doesn't Warner's own Tenet? They released that in theatres and no one came. They might be betting on movie theatres not returning to normal for years if ever. Time to cut and run and do more budget friendly streaming stuff.

yeah, but WW1984 is also a more friendly movie for a box office hit.

Speaking of what people will pay, we just rented out a theater here in town on Christmas Day for $100 to watch it.

Last year, a movie in a theater was a lame Christmas present. This year, it's gonna be da bomb.

So you’re looking at $20 a head. Are concessions included in your deal? Are they even offered?

We’ve done that before but tickets to the actual flick we were seeing were not included in the total. If tickets aren’t included in your deal, I’d cancel it. Especially with no concessions included. You’ll be looking at an over $200 total just to watch a movie you can watch at home. I love theaters, too, but not $200 worth.

Honestly this is a terrible deal. I'd maybe do it if I could bring a bunch of friends but five people? $100 plus food and tickets?

What if your favorite streaming app is HBO Max and you want to stream Wonder Woman 84, would they make you pay for a ticket then?
