Outside of Grimes or Janelle Monet, I don't hear anything interesting or innovative in this new wave of pop stars that frequently get called brilliant. I mentioned in another thread that a lot of it sounds frustratingly reserved and sterile, and some of it sounds downright amateurish.

Billie Eilish might be another exception, but I don't personally care for her sound that much.

Lana Del Rey is a fucking brilliant artist. Lorde is consistently good. Carly Ray had some great songs.

There are pop artists that are talented, or make some good songs. But pop music/chart music in general is the worst. I downloaded the billboard 100 from 2018. Something like 95 of the songs I’ve not heard again.

I don’t think the quality of pop is significantly worse on the average than it is within any other genre. Quality varies wildly no matter what type of music you’re listening to.
