Didn't the director say that the songs were so good that they took attention away from other parts of the film that he wanted in the foreground? Could just be an excuse but I can think of a few soundtracks that do just that.
I heard EV received no positive feedback from the early listens.
Scott Cooper said the songs were distracting with the footage. he decided not to use them. He should have, because the movie sucks.

Even if all the songs suck, it would be like saying you don't want to hear a terrible but unreleased full PJ or Ed record. Anyway, the quality of Ed's songs have been consistent, not so much with the others.

Didnt he also say something along the lines of "not ready for prime time" in other words "they sucked"?

This. I'm trying to think, but for the length of their career, has there ever been any released video taken when they were making a record? I don't think there was any in Crowe's documentary. It's just bizarre that in a 30-year career, there's never been anything released when they were in the studio (as opposed to something like Single Video Theory).

LOL, but also I thought he just didnt know that the recordings they were doing at the time were final takes and being shaped into an album.

My holy grail would be a studio version of Of The Earth, and a full-band studio recording of Footsteps. The nearest I have is the demo with someone sneezing at the beginning and Ed saying "bless you". Horrible quality too. Hopefully both will be released one day.
