I dunno. This has as much Dallas in it as it does Deadwood.
Correct Yellowstone is a soap opera. It has higher production values but it is in every way a soap opera. Westerns can certainly be modern though. No Country For Old Men is a western. Hell or High Water is a western.

- Spoiler: show
- That arc in season three where he has to help clean up the livestock agent's mess in the horse trailer is peak Jamie. I love/hate how easily he lawyers up in the prison cell and then switches gears for the girl's dad by weaseling into becoming Mr. Montana politician. "I did this for all fathers."
- Spoiler: show
- I don't know man I think killing that reporter was peak Jaime...or maybe sterilizing his sister lol....

- Well fuck. I probably should have made it known that I'm not through the series yet on that last on. I suspected as much, but I haven't gotten to that reveal yet. Oh well.
A lot of things are probably "peak Jamie" btw. He's such a predictable character (at least at the S3 halfway point where I'm at...)

I think there's a lot of film criticism that sees Western as a formal/generic mode that doesn't necessarily depend on a specific setting. So you can have a movie set in Paris that is a Western in terms of narrative structure (this is actually an argument my buddy makes about Dheepan).
Period piece, I don't know--that's interesting. I think generally period piece means something set outside of the present moment, but it also invokes a sense of ornate attention to period-specific details and consciousness of historical position. I think a (shitty but revealing) movie like Hot Summer Nights is a period piece for the 80s. What would a period piece about the 2020s be? I'm not sure, is it even possible for a creative team to achieve a degree of remove about their historical conjecture in order to re-create it as an aesthetic form?
This Western setting, where you have ranch hands and whatnot, can’t really fit into the “modern” category - wouldn’t be realistic because nobody wants to work anymore SMDH

This is why all good movies are heist movies, they maintain the necessary narrative role of work in a post-work context.

This is a good post and I think mostly right. I balk a bit at the idea that setting isn't necessary for the genre (Westerns, I mean). I need to think about that.

I don't know if I agree with it either but it seems to be a vein of thinking within film theory. Not sure how widely accepted it is.

Would you consider the fractions of cents heist scheme in Office Space to have been “work”?

Let's normalize calling gritty NYC crime dramas "easterns".

Oh my yes, Office Space is about the declining possibilities for a heist in a digitized white-collar world.

I believe it can, 'Western' being the very foundation of the pyramid;
From Dusk till Dawn hits a ton of genre notes.
