South Korea is probably a more appropriate example. Service is mandatory because a real and violent threat from people who a few generations ago were friends and neighbors is a small wall away

I'm glad we have this thread so we can figure out and solve such a crisis.

Though it skips many of the effects of the British mandate, this is a good primer for those unfamiliar with the history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict without taking sides.
