thanks Anders..we've had a great time..the only thing that would push it over the top is to see one of the crazy bicyclists at night speeding around pedestrians get t-boned by a car..one can hope..

Haha, yeah they’re awful. The twenty foot wide, free for all bike lanes don’t help with the chaos either.

Paris is such a vibe, like many Euro cities. I went light on the the sightseeing and museums too; just wanted to walk around and take in the people and the scene.

guys, what is the tipping situation like there?

the other day one of my coworkers said tipping is a thing. she said he used to go there all the time for work, and people tipped.

i've heard otherwise from friends who've gone, as well as my brother-in-law who went in janurary. i've always heard service industry folks make a living wage there.

i ended up going through reddit and there were lots of locals (at least they claimed to be) chiming in and saying, "DO NOT bring tipping culture over here." there were some people who said their servers asked for a tip when the tab came. locals again chimed in to say that mostly happens in tourist trap areas, or because they hear an American.

here in the states, i feel like i'm a pretty good tipper, good or bad service, but i don't want to insult another culture.

what is the move?

She says tipping is not the norm and she's only done it on super special occasions like when a server gives you free shit

And supposedly the Middle East and Africa have some tipping culture, but no one goes there.

we never tipped at the restaurants, the service was always included...the only place we tipped was at Harry's bar

I think there are probably levels. Like the US is the most extreme, while other countries that have tipping culture, the workers probably aren’t as dependent on it (ie are paid living wages or closer to).

Imagine how handy a thread dedicated to tipping cultures across the world, pinned at the top of a travel forum, would be.

10% is standard and expected across much of Latin America. I encourage visiting friends to tip more as things are generally much cheaper for them here, and it makes a big difference for servers
