Re: Apple Atmos
I've been enjoying the Atmos mix of Lightning Bolt (the album) lately - so much easier on the ears.
Has anyone ripped the Atmos version and attempted to make a stereo fold-down version? Or any other of the PJ albums available in Atmos?
I know it's not a simple process but IMO a very worthwhile one to give us an alternative and more listenable mix, provided it's done by someone who knows what they're doing (which counts me out).

Re: Apple Atmos
What made me finally disable Atmos on my apple music was how absolutely shite the mix for Scared of Fear sounded in my car. Guitars were practically deleted and it was just bass and drums.

Getting a stand-alone blu-ray release, as well. Available for pre-order from dot com.Farmer John wrote:A new Atmos version of Vitalogy mixed by Josh Evans is out there now.
Would be nice to see the others get put out.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I've only listened to the first two tracks on Vitalogy. the only thing i notice is I can hear the bass better on STBC.

Re: Apple Atmos
After one listen where I mostly paid attention the whole time, I'd say overall this is one of the better one of these mixes. But it can be a bit of a mixed bag, per usual.
Lots of fun unnoticed details that are more prominent in the mix.
You would think Tremor Christ would be perfect for this kind of thing, but that was really the only one where I was not a fan of the mix. The guitars are a lot louder than Ed, to the point of making my ears hurt.
Satan’s Bed is a standout. That one sounds especially great.

Re: Apple Atmos
reupped apple music. worth 10 bucks for a new vitalogy mix. up to not for you and its pretty good. Last exit not as good as regular version. The wheezing guitar is more prominent but Ed is pretty low in mix
guitars are sharper in stbc, especially in the beginning
Not For You may be a superior mix. can hear the bridge chanting more clearly. and not related to the mix, but we dont talk enough at how good the bridge - final verse transition in Not For You is. when all the sound drops out but Eddie’s judgemental, diffident rift and a sustained note from mike or stone as everyone else comes back
tremor christ feels more garagey. guitars and drums more prominent. good up front but as the emotional core shifts to eddie he is buried

Re: Apple Atmos
nothingman was a wash - more prominent echo in the background vocals. ed is rightfully prominent. its an all timer performance of his, and while the music is gorgeous, its always been a bed for his vocald
dave A generally more prominent in these mixes
Whipping is just a wall of guitars. feels almost live, but some of the differentiation is lost. first chorus oddly quiet. Really a stone forward mix. Like last exit the original mix is definitely superior but still cool to hear different moments stand out
obviously the pry,to atmos mix alone is worth the price of admission.
(actually it is better)

Re: Apple Atmos
okay - corduroy gives a lot to work with
Guitars are LOUD - the weird drop in sound levels as the first verse starts. song just feels like there is more of everything. i guess eddie is underneath the guitars but it fits as this is a song about trying to hold onto your voice
different guitar prominent in the bridge
lead into outro feels just a bit more ominous
outro feels like it lost some of its interplay though
like most of these mixes there are cool momemnts that come at a cost
bugs is more spacious and absurdist, less claustrophobic
some high pitched background vocals i never noticed towards the end

Re: Apple Atmos
satans bed - a bit more playful vamping from Ed at the start
stone/jeff’s part is a bit chunkier in the mix at the expense of Mike (outside his featured solo). The new guitar part that comes in at satan’s dick is much more prominent. The last few moments of the outro are heavier. This was ok. satans bed will always be chasing the groove of atlanta 94
betterman - start of this is lovely. powerful and delicate at the same time. feels more like nothingman than the normal betterman start - like its the main event rather than waiting for it to start. Almost like it is like the narration of the past instead of living through the moment
but this also means the second half of the song is less cathartic, so again the atmos tradeoff. eddie’s background vocals at the end sound a little more prominent in a pleasing way

Re: Apple Atmos
aye davinita was fun - felt more like its own thing, rather than an interstitial moment
okay time for the other main event. Immortality loses some of its detatched atmosphere for more immediate presence. the music is less sad and reflective , more panic attack, and more at odds with Eddie’s more subtle performance. almost like a dialogue.
mike’s solo lands more like a showcase moment . ohhh, some notes i hadn’t noticed before.
eddie and the music synch up at the end but i may have preferred it if the music dropped underneath him to preserve more opposition between the two. outro is more in your face.
and as this is the end of the record proper, thus ends my listen
