Don't worry. Eventually Eddie will realize he can make money off of this and he will HAVE to release it.

I can only hope that they mean they will not be commercially released in association with this film.

I think this was this guy's idea the whole time. Scam Ed into writing an album ONLY FOR HIM.

I picture it as more of a Tim Bisley / Mike Watt relationship.

Director kept it for his own personal collection, only to mention it in an interview to piss people off

"Oh. Oh, geez. These are....gosh, these are just terrible. We can't use this stuff in the film! It'll be ruined!"
"I know. But I mean, what do we tell the guy? And didn't we already sort of put it to press that his music was going to be in the movie? We're in a world of it, here, guys."
"Shit. Shit, shit, shit. This is bad. This is really bad. I don't know what we can do."
"What if....what if we imply that the music is SO good, we're worried that it will take away from the movie? Like, it will overwhelm it with awesomness and glory? If we say that, then both the warbling leprechaun and his goose-stepping fanclub troglodytes will be satisfied."
"Oh my god, yes! But, then won't he end up releasing it as a solo album? And everyone will be able to hear for themselves that it sucks. Won't we still end up looking like assholes if that happens?"
"Hmm...we'll need to discourage him from thinking it would make a good release. We'll say that it's...personal. Yeah. In fact it's TOO personal. But not to him...he'd be able to tell we were lying about that. To the characters! Yeah! That sounds like the kind of bullshit musicians love to buy into! Remember how serious that Pete Townser jack-off took Tommy? And that Roger Walters fellow with his Wall? Ha! This is bound to work!"
"High five!"
"Fucking musicians."

there's probably a good deal of truth in this

Haha, yeah:
“It was a very difficult decision to make because any time someone goes to those depths to write something that’s that beautiful and that personal and that meaningful to him, and to me, you want it to fit into the movie,” Cooper says. “Eddie has such a rich voice, but what makes it difficult is his voice is much like Bruce’s. It’s unmistakably Eddie Vedder. The second you hear that voice you know, ‘Jesus Christ, that’s Eddie Vedder.’ And even if I was using it as a needle drop in the film, if Christian were driving down the road and he turned on the radio and here’s this Eddie Vedder song, again, it was just so powerful.
I know it sounds odd but it was so powerful that it took me out of the narrative.”

Eddie's singing often takes me out of the narrative of PJ songs
