They may have changed course in order to land at a nearby airfield after a fire or explosion on board.
True but the lack of communications doesn't back this up.
Someone knows...
There may have been an electrical failure or fire in the comms/tracking systems. It's standard pilot training to disable any shorted system or one that is related to any fire/smoking problem, and to immediately divert to the nearest runway.
If that's what's occurred here, perhaps a fire that couldn't be extinguished or caused too much damage, then it's possible the plane couldn't make it to the runway and crashed into the ocean.
Whilst still terrible for those on the plane, and the families that lost them, this scenario would be much better than a terrorist/suicide case.

Not to mention that a fire or explosion could lead to a series of events where the plane decompresses, the crew/passengers lose consciousness and the plane continues on the same vector on autopilot until it runs out of fuel.

All very plausible. What are the chances of a mobile message or email getting sent?

If the plane is too far from land, I think they wouldn't have had reception. Or sudden decompression as Zeb stated. There was a flight in the US, in the late 90's that flew for about 6 hours after a sudden decompression that killed all on board. They couldn't stop the plane and it eventually crashed when it ran out of fuel. I believe there's some news articles online somewhere, if I can find one.
If the oz navy are as good at geography as whoever did this, that plane is staying lost.

It's more than far fetched, it's idiotic.
