I think Give Up The Ghost is one of the prettiest Radiohead songs I'll ever hear.

Re: The everyone LOVES radiohead thread!
I was referring more to song structure. I don't remember every song sounding the same. But I remember feeling like the individual songs weren't taking me anywhere unexpected or exciting.surface the north wrote:Do you mean that the song structures are repetitive or that each track on the album sounds the same? If it's the latter then I couldn't disagree more.
But, again , it's been a while.

I don't think I've heard any of the non-album tracks - the b-sides, leftovers, etc - from the King of Limbs sessions.

Oh man, Daily Mail is gorgeous. I like that more than anything on KoL.

It's great live, but I don't know that I would have liked it on the album.

I'll make revisiting KoL a priority. But already, Daily Mail grabbed me more than anything from the album on first listen. I've already listened to it again. I didn't do that with any of the album's tracks.

Man, I couldn't disagree with this more.theplatypus wrote:The absence of any memorable melodies. Melody is one of Radiohead's strongest suits, even in their deliberately "difficult" records, and in TKOL it was more-or-less abandoned for an emphasis on dense textures and rhythm.surface the north wrote:Joey (and anyone else), what was it about The King of Limbs that didn't resonate with you?
I think "Lotus Flower" and "Codex" are both wonderful melodies.

I don't know, I revisited the album thanks to this thread and I stand by my assessment. I still like the record, but less so than any other except for Pablo Honey. And Reid, I didn't say there were no melodies, I said there were no memorable ones. The only one that gave me pause to reconsider was "Lotus Flower"; other than that, I find them stiff and, honestly, pretty boring, almost like they're subservient to the rhythm and chord progressions instead of gliding elegantly above them like the best Radiohead songs. Compare "Codex" to something like "Sail to the Moon" and it pales in comparison, stale and lifeless. As textured and layered as this album is, and as good as it sounds, I find it melodically gaunt and anemic in comparison to their previous work. Perhaps this is by design, or perhaps Mr. Magpie did take their melody.

We clearly value different things in music, so I sort of understand what you're referring to, particularly when you touch on that interesting bit about the melody being "subservient to the music." Those are just things that I enjoy. I don't find the melodies "gaunt" at all. I guess that's sort of why this album resonates so well with me.

Sure. And like I said, I do like the album, just not as much as I like the others. "Lotus Flower" is pretty great.

OK computer
The Bends
Kid A
In Rainbows
Hail to the Thief
Amnesiac
The Kings of Limbs
Pablo Honey
That's how I would rate them, the Bends/OKC/Kid A remains essential to me...I think I was 16 when I first heard 'Street Spirit' and a couple of weeks later 'Paranoid Android' was released. Those years will always be my favorite RH years.

Re: The everyone LOVES radiohead thread!
I think Platypus is right, the melodies arent memorables...its like all the songs are about to take off but they finish quietly..i remember thinking where is the band as a whole? It was a letdown for me because i was so in love with In Rainbows i was expecting something else.
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.

I still think the version of Videotape that they played live on the tour before they released In Rainbows is one of the best songs the band has written. Then they messed it all up.

I didn't like King of Limbs until I saw the songs live. And usually I can't stand it when people say stuff like that. So I dunno.
