Ed's delivery of the line "Don't mean to push, but I'm being shoved" is one of my favorites of his entire career.

"It's like rayaaaain on your wedding day..."

I fucking guarantee that if Whipping was a LB release, all of you fuckers would pan the shit out of it!

Yes, because if there is anything true about the posters on here, it's that we definitely don't take music seriously enough to have well-thought out, reasoned opinions about music that we've cultivated over years of impassioned listening.

The lyrics to Whipping definitely would get shit on here... I like it... a lot... but that's just because I like Ed more than I like Alanis.

and yes, your favorite line is pretty intense... especially in the pit in 1993!

No, they wouldn't. They'd get shit from the same people who give them shit already. They'd be liked by the same people who like them already.

I'm not sure what Alanis Morissette has to do with any of this, but this is unfair, I think. I'm sure there are those out there that dislike just because. But it seems like most of the posters around here defend their tastes pretty well and like what they like regardless of something as arbitrary as newness. I think it's actually more likely to find someone who likes Whipping just because it's on Vitalogy than it is to find the opposite.

Well, of course... that's the reality of it, rather than my hypothetical. It's on Vitalogy, not LB.

However, take the opposite of my hypothetical... What if Pendulum was written for another album like Yield or Binaural... do you think it would get as much criticism as it does now? I don't... not here, but maybe I'm wrong. We'll never know.

I think the band that recorded Yield or Binaural would have made different choices, resulting in a different song. But, if the exact version of Pendulum, as we know it now, for argument's sake, appeared on Binaural, I think you'd hear a lot of people talking about it's potential. In fact, I think one could argue that folks would like it even less in that context because of how well Binaural achieves all those things that the detractors find lacking in Pendulum.

But don't listen to me. What the holy fuck do I know? I mean, I goddamn LOVE Alanis Morissette. I'll take every song on Jagged Little Pill & Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie over Pendulum and Whipping. Please and thank you.

I put Pendulum in a similar category and ranking as Sleight Of Hand, mainly because of the lyrical subject matter and the production aspects. They are both THE standout atmospheric songs of their respective albums. I don't see how SoH has the staying power that some (not all, sorry...) around here say is already lost with Pendulum. Conversely, I think The Whipping and Last Exit are somewhat interchangeable with MYM/LB, despite the production value... definitely in a live setting. does MYM/LB get the same gushing praise as their Vitalogy counterparts... I'm just saying the past is sometimes romanticized a little too much... and definitely by those voting for Whipping in this round... Just another asshole with an opinion here.

BTW... nothing against Alanis... I mean she's like nails on a chalkboard to me, but "To Each His Reach"... I think the lyrics to Whipping sorta parallel the Ironic song... which isn't even about irony, it's about bad luck.
