Re: Thriller vs. Purple Rain
Prince's career has more in common with David Bowie's than it does with Michael Jackson's. Should we compare Purple Rain and Let's Dance?

Besides, it's 1999 and Thriller that came out within a month of each other.

Re: Thriller vs. Purple Rain
Prince is a competitor. MJ was the biggest radio star on the planet. While I can't say for sure this is the case I would imagine Prince thought he should be the biggest radio star on the planet. I find it hard to believe he never thought "they think that guy is great wait till the hear this". If not then his ego has no bounds except when it comes to Michael Jackson the Monkees of the 80's.

yeah, but is 1999 Prince's defining album, or his most important record of that decade?Lament wrote:Besides, it's 1999 and Thriller that came out within a month of each other.

I am sort of bemused by the fact that comparing Purple Rain to arguably the most beloved album of all time is in some way an insult to prince

To a lot of people, yeah it is. Most people would probably say Sign "O" the Times was more defining and important than either though.stip wrote:yeah, but is 1999 Prince's defining album, or his most important record of that decade?Lament wrote:Besides, it's 1999 and Thriller that came out within a month of each other.
You should start a thread comparing Titanic to Pulp Fiction.stip wrote:I am sort of bemused by the fact that comparing Purple Rain to arguably the most beloved album of all time is in some way an insult to prince

MJ shouldn't have left Of the Earth, Sad, and Cold Confession off of Thriller. Could've been a classic...

rolling stone put Purple Rain at number 2 for the best albums of the 80s. Thriller was at 7

For the record Lament had no issue with the Eddie Vedder/Michael Jackson vocal comparison. Though to be fair Pearl Jam was the Monkees of the 90s.
