The back half is definitely more interesting. The whole album feels rather fresh.

Great publicity job for the band too.

Danger Mouse albums sound more like Danger Mouse albums than the band, which I'm not exactly opposed to in this case. His input here is very welcome to give them some semblance of groove (PJ could sorely use this as well). But as with most ancient bands grasping for relevance, this one sounds like a pastiche of current trends, with a bit of U2's patented bullshit "power of love" platitudes thrown in. I hear everything from KoL to Black Keys (of course).

Still, its not terrible. Far better than PJ's recent efforts to do the same shit.

Second half is a lot stronger than the first half. I'm not sure I agree with trying to take just about every song to an anthemic place but this is a big step up on No Line. The vocals a little too out front for me and Bono is too wordy. This isn't the U2 I fell in love with but I can see listening to this a few times and looking forward to seeing them live and hearing some of these songs. Just no more stadiums, please.

The song for Joe Strummer sounds like one that Mick Jones would appreciate more. Hell, when is someone going to dedicate a song to Mick?

I stopped listening earlier after my third time through (though I went ahead and listened to the second half a fourth time). I didn't want to burn out on it tonight, but I keep wanting to turn off everything else I've put on so that I can play Songs of Innocence again. That's a good early sign for me.

Like I said with Lightning Bolt, I'll be happy with 1-2 songs that will end up among my top few tiers of U2 songs, and enough other good stuff to keep the album in fairly regular rotation for a few months. Unlike with LB, I think I might be getting what I hoped for. I think I may even be getting more than I hoped for...

I've had 2 plays thru a phone speaker and the second half in the car. I like the production but feel they could have gone further. And the songs are strong without being huge. Sure there are huge moments but not complete songs. Not bad and will get some more listens, which is a lot more than I expected.

No you are safe.
Actually it did add itself automatically to my library when I logged into my iTunes account. Fuck that shit.
That's nothing U2 did, that's a setting you've placed on your account to auto-download purchases. U2 just had their giveaway work like a purchase.
I don't purchase anything on itunes so I haven't done any of that. Plus, if it auto-downloads PURCHASES why does it auto-download this fucking thing that I have actually NOT PURCHASED? As far as I know the free singles of the week on iTunes are not automatically added to my library just because they're free, I'd need to actually decide I want them for that to happen. This is not a big deal but this is literaly the same shitty thing that people who send unsolicited mass e-mails do. This is spam, period. I can't believe people think this is a great move. No wait actually I can believe it.

You know, it doesn't actually download it automatically. It just makes the album available in your cloud automatically, you still need to hit on the 'cloud download' button to actually download it to your computer/phone.

So...

But it was added my my music regardless. It was added to this playlist where all the albums tagged 2014 automatically go so if I went there unknowingly and hit play this crap would have been there and it would have been playing. So what fucking difference does it make whether it's in the cloud or not? It makes none. You just don't force your shitty band's shitty new album into my playlists without my consent. And that goes for non-shitty bands too.

I really hope you don't listen to the radio, Heathen.

Well I don't.

But even if I did, this is a totally different situation. When you listen to the radio you know that you're listening to the music someone else decided you would hear. It's kind of the point of listening to the radio. When you're listening to your own music library you don't expect something that you have no desire to hear to magically appear because some corporation decided it would be cool to have the most obnoxious band ever promote your new fucking useless device and to add that band to your library whether you like it or not. It is not like this is an outrage or anything, but it is exactly like spam e-mails, it's a shitty and annoying thing to do and you'd have to be pretty brainwashed in order to think this is a great idea.

Can we just have a thread for people who whine about every single thing U2 does to hang out in so those of us who actually want to talk about their music can do so?

You're right. Proper circlejerking requires your full attention.

It does. And a "We hate U2 thread!" would let all of you circlejerk over how fucking cool it makes you to hate U2 in 2014 without the horrible annoyance of dealing with people who have actually listened to the record in question and would like to share their thoughts on it with each other.

Yeah because making a couple of posts about the shitty way this album was released is totally about being cool for not liking U2. You're better than that, Lament, you sound like stip in PJ Chat right now. But hey if it hurts too much to have to hear a negative opinion about your band I sincerely apologize and next time

I can see the album in my Purchased section. It has not automatically downloaded to my Library. I do have the option to download it for free.

You made one of the first five or so posts in this thread. And it wasn't about how the album was released or to complain about it automatically downloading. Before any of those topics came up in here, you were already posting in this thread. So you're gonna need a better excuse for your initial presence.

So do tell, why were you in this thread in the first place? There are hundreds of threads in OB about bands or albums I just don't fucking care about. I've never once felt the need to go into one. I don't understand why anyone would.

Like I said, if you want to actually listen to the album and tell us why you hate it in some vaguely critical fashion, then by all means, feel free to do so. Otherwise, I just don't get the point.

Y'know what, I don't even fucking care anymore. This is why I pretty much never post outside of the Secret Mixtape or Post-strike baseball tournament anymore. I'm over it.

Have fun.
