Yeah, that's where I feel my largest disconnect with this is... The categorization of a movie as enrichment, or even more egregiously, as "need" or irreplaceable part of ones life, when in reality it's no different than an Ice Cream come or going to a an afternoon ballgame. They're wants. Things we enjoy. No amount of language, gushing or acknowledgement of the hypocrisy is going to change the fact that it's still just "something I like so much I am willing to compromise my ethics because I dont WANT to go without it"

I can buy this element of it, to an extent. Using LV's Paul Attenasio example- I already bought the Homicide DVD's. Im not going to throw them out, but I could probably reconcile continuing to watch them, because I wouldnt be SUPPORTING his work, simply enjoying it. But promoting upcoming things as being "excited" about them is, or spending money to support them or encouraging others to do so just seems... wrong.
I can definitely see where you're coming from. And you're not even really wrong. For example, I don't patronize Chick-Fil-A or Hobby Lobby because I don't want my money to go to supporting their causes. So I guess that just makes me a huge hypocrite, haha. But honestly, I've never really looked at paying money to watch a movie as supporting the filmmaker - I'm just paying to be able to see a film I might enjoy. But if I think that, then shouldn't I just be able to pay for a chicken sandwich I might enjoy at Chick-Fil-A too? Fuck, man. I don't know.
Like I said, I've never been able to reconcile this shit, even after thinking about it for years. It's a fucking hornet's nest. I just don't fucking know.

I just can't imagine my life without Polanski's films in it; they mean so much to me and informed so many of many cinematic sensibilities. The waters of this issue couldn't possibly be any murkier for me.
I think i could accept this response if you could point me to where Roman Polanski saved a million antelopes. Dev told me one of his movies could do that.
What if Loathed doesn't pay for the film, watches it, and it enriches his life in any way whatsoever. Maybe it makes him a better person?
This is valid only if its impossible for a non-rapist's films to do the same.
so what should we tell him? Hey this polanski movie will probably help you cope with whatever you are going through(for example) but you should keep looking and see if you can'y find another movie that will effect you on the same level before you let yourself watch the movie by polanski. putting this into application is absurd.
Are we that fragile that we'll simply fall apart from the burden of whatever we're going through if we don't have the perfect movie to help us cope with it?
Easy enough to say until someone deems something you have connection with to be immoral. And, yes, somethings have substantial importance to certain human beings.

We need to decide what's more important. Refusing to support a child rapist currently in exile to avoid extradition, or giving yourself a nice piece of art to help gain some perspective on life.

Exactly. Supporting a child rapist because you refuse to go without a piece of art is pretty fucking selfish if you ask me.

It was a fine post, sir. Just wanted to point out that we're basically on the same page. Except, fuck I goddamn LOVE Midnight In Paris!

self-worth is highly correlated with being able to identify with things that people consider to be fundamental to their character. For example, a gay dude's self-worth might suffer if he has to hide he is gay. I think we all have things that we consider to be fundamental to who we are. It is not impossible to conceive of a situation wherein a movie has a significant impact on a person and becomes incorporated into their self-concept. It's the same problem as taking away your kid's marilyn manson cds... You don't have the authority to say what certain things mean to people or what impact they had. Anyway, just playing devil's advocate.

It's funny because I see Lament is browsing the forum. Might be interesting to get him to weigh in after the Lost Prophet's fiasco. I know that band probably meant a lot to him.

Just wait until Honey Boo Boo comes out as a serial rapist and see how it affects your self-concept.

I'm fine moving the relevant posts to a different thread. But I think this is a valid and (from my selfish point of view) necessary conversation. If the mods are going edit the thread, I'd appreciate not just deleting the comments, but moving them to a more appropriate forum.

I'M CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT JURASSIC WORLD.
If only so I can relive the biggest movie summer of my childhood.
