Those movies would be way more awesome if he was a giant slug instead.

A. No surprise that we disagree here, but I think that's a pretty massive oversimplification of what movies are "for."
B. Considering the experiential nature of what you say movies are for, and speaking as someone who cares fuck-all about plot: "plot holes" could still be a problem if they take you out of the experience.
Just kind of playing devil's advocate here, I guess.

Oh I agree, but just look at how ticky-tack most of these are. You really can't make a good sci-fi movie without plot holes, IMO. Sometimes you have to sacrifice absolute realistic accuracy for good things like tension, story, and beauty. Obviously if something is totally fucking egregious then it's different. But if a movie is really good I think you should be willing to look past it not being 1000% ironclad realistic.

Okay, we're in total agreement then.

Like I said above, what if the Japanese guys who originally made Godzilla were like "Oh, this wouldn't actually happen. You know what, fuck it, let's not do it." Imagination is inherently based on things that wouldn't/couldn't happen, and exploring the realm in which they do happen.

The thing is there's a difference between requesting an audience to suspend disbelief and asking them to endure stupid or lazy writing.
