Don't Be Afraid of The Dark (1973) used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid in the early '80s.

yeah, that was a good oneBurtReynolds wrote:yeah I remember that too.durdencommatyler wrote:I totally remember that movie! Actually, it was on again maybe six years ago. And I walked into the room, saw it on the TV and instantly recognized it. That's how much that thing impacted me. Almost 20 years later and I recognized some random scene. Unreal.numbers wrote:No bullshit, the scariest movie I've ever seen was a lifetime movie called "I Know My Name Is Steven." It was a true story about a kid that got kidnapped by a child predator who kept him as his "son" until he escaped in his late teens. I was like 11 years old and I was petrified.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). It feels like you're watching a snuff film.

Generally, I hate the experience of having to watch a movie for the first time. I find that it usually feels like a chore.RussellManiac12 wrote:Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). It feels like you're watching a snuff film.
That said, I would give almost anything to be able to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time again. No other cinematic experience has ever even come close to having the visceral effect on me that film did. God what an amazing movie.

I second SotL. I was like 12 and it was creepy. Still holds up. Great flick.LetMeSleep wrote:Probably The Silence Of The Lambs when I was fifteen. I was very, very stoned and it completely freaked me out.

Fire in the Sky was a good choice. That's an old, barely watched movie. How'd you think of that.
I never find the Exorcist scary when I watch it, but I keep seeing that girl in my sleep for days afterward.
Blair Witch never scared me.
Watch Deep Blue before you go to the ocean and see if that doesn't fuck your shit up.
Is there an attic scene in the Ring? Because every time I have to go in the attic, I think that girl's gonna slice my head off as soon as it breaks the plane of the ceiling.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Also, I've never seen Human Centipede, but I've spent a lot of time thinking about it and being grossed out. Way more time than I've spent fretting about any movie I've actually seen.

Re: What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?
it's been a long time since i saw it, and i only watched it once, but i remember event horizon being pretty fucking scary. any time the question of scariest movie comes up i immediately think of this film. i went in to the movie thinking it was a pretty straight up sci-fi flick but boy was i wrong. was i just a pansy kid or does anyone else remember event horizon being a scary movie?

Not really scary-scary, but Martyrs left me disturbed for a while.

The Ring
The Babadook
The Descent
The Conjuring
Insidious
Evil Dead
The Murnau Nosferatu
There's also a black and white (maybe sepia in fact) indie horror/satanic movie that I saw the first (overlong) scene of on the internet several years ago for which I can't remember the name. It begins with someone wearing a mask, or a helmet and opening his belly with a knife or something and slowly pulling his guts out. I think that it's silent. Does it ring a bell to anyone? It traumatized me. Chances are I read about it on RM first.
