Now we're back on track!

I adore The Artist. And I'm really into Crash also. Haven't seen 12YaS.
I figured you'd like TA and I understand why people do. But I can't stand it, personally.

I kind of doubt you'd have a strong positive reaction to 12 Years. You don't seem like the type that digs exercises in misery and cruelty.
As a rule, no. But if there's a larger point I can dig it. I'm trying to think of a good example of something that's damaging and miserable and difficult and still totally worth it.
My relationship with movie violence/cruelty/sadism is long and storied
Like Happiness. That thing is TOUGH to watch. But totally worth it.

2. Unforgiven
3. The Godfather
4. The Deer Hunter
5. Dances with Wolves

Argo was a lot of fun. I wouldn't have voted for it for Best Picture. But I liked the movie.

So how many of you fine folks think Birdman's gonna be able to pull off the top prize tonight?

Was talking to one of the guys that was also in the show that I did with Ellar Coltrane's mom, and apparently she'll be sitting on the floor at the Oscars with him. I thought that was very cool.

Here are my "official" picks for tonight:

PICTURE - Birdman
DIRECTOR - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
LEAD ACTRESS - Julianne Moore
LEAD ACTOR - Eddie Redmayne
SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Patricia Arquette
SUPPORTING ACTOR - JK Simmons
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY - The Grand Budapest Hotel
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY - The Imitation Game
CINEMATOGRAPHY - Birdman
FILM EDITING - Boyhood
PRODUCTION DESIGN - The Grand Budapest Hotel
MAKE-UP & HAIR - The Grand Budapest Hotel
COSTUME DESIGN - The Grand Budapest Hotel
SOUND MIXING - Whiplash
SOUND EDITING - American Sniper
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FEATURE - Ida
VISUAL EFFECTS - Intersteller
ORIGINAL SONG - Glory (from Selma)
ORIGINAL SCORE - The Theory of Everything
ANIMATED FEATURE - How to Train Your Dragon 2
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE - Citizenfour
LIVE ACTION SHORT - The Phone Call
ANIMATED SHORT - Feast
DOCUMENTARY SHORT - Crisis Hotline

Sometimes I'm really good at this and sometimes I'm just the worst. I haven't seen much of anything that's nominated and I have a tremendous Birdman bias.... So, we'll see. I tried to be fair and look at who won the other awards and whatnot. Some of this is just throwing a dart though.

Ha! Those are all my picks exactly except for Sound Mixing, for which I chose American Sniper.

Really?! That's nuts!

I thought about AS for both sound categories. But I feel like "music movies" tend to sneak one of them a lot. Maybe that's dumb. I should look that up, actually. But I won't be surprised if AS wins both. And I might even change it by the time I fill out my ballot tonight.

I try to go almost entirely off of probability/math/other wins these days, as pretty much every time I try to inject my own thoughts into it (like your "music movies" thinking), it backfires on me.
