If you're looking for a fantastic beer bar with great food go to Sunset on Brighton Ave near Harvard Ave. If you're looking for some fantastic tapas and sangria (I know, it screams Boston) go to Tasca on Brighton Ave near Washington Street, it's one of my favorite places. There's Eastern Standard on Commonwealth Ave that's really fucking good but avoid it if the Red Sox are playing a home game. If you're looking for good seafood and are near the aquarium/seaport/northern south boston area check out the No Name for sure. In fact, if you find yourself in that area you might want to check out the Harpoon brewery and get a beer and an amazing pretzel. That whole area is a short walk from Faneuil Hall too so there's plenty to check out.

If you go to Italy (or probably any other place in western Europe such as Paris, Barcelona, etc.) don't eat at any restaurant that publishes their menu in more than two languages (the local language and English, max). Especially if they print in Chinese or Russian. It will not be authentic food.
Same goes for places with pictures of their food in the front window or on the menu.

It was good. Decent wait. I had a lobster casserole dish. They don't offer dishes like that locally. It's neato that I can say that I've eaten in the oldest restaurant in the US. I also ate at the Atlantic Fish Company. I had the crab roll (sandwich, not sushi). Good, but I was expecting better. Still the best lobster or crab roll I've ever eaten was in Pittsburgh. Go figure.

we picked up bagels at st viateurs, regarded by many as the best bagel out there. they're slimmer and crunchier than nyc bagels, which i kinda prefer. montreal bagels > nyc bagels.

I had that last time I was in Chicago. I want to try all new places, but I am tempted to go back to Shaw's.
for oysters? shaw's is good for oysters. if you want crab, go to Joe's Stone Crab (and they too have a great filet).
Thank you for this wonderful recommendation!
